Trombonist Rembert James hails from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia where he studied classical music with the Royal Police Force Band. In 1976, he united with legendary trombonist and arranger Melba Liston to conduct jazz workshops throughout the Caribbean. Rembert spent two years studying jazz improvisation in Jamaica after which he accepted a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. H reunited in New York with Melba Liston touring with her jazz ensemble and the historic Jazz Mobile where he performed with Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, James Spaulding and many other jazz greats.
Upon his arrival in Los Angeles in the early eighties, Rembert joined the Leslie Drayton Orchestra and later the David Isles Orchestra where he performed both traditional and contemporary jazz at several local venues. Currently, Rembert is a member of the orchestra established in the memory of Horace Tapscott, The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. In addition, he continues to perform with his own local jazz ensemble, Bone Voyagé in various studio projects and with various reggae bands. His musical travels include returns to St. Lucia for the annual jazz festival and tours to Africa with pianist Billy Mitchell. He has played with Wes Anderson as well as McCoy Tyner and performed with Jamaican Superstars, Aswad, Frankie Paul, Freddie McGregor, Yellowman, and The Itals. He recorded with Peter Tosh in 1979 and recorded and toured with Mandrill, Don Carlos, Solomon Burke and Mark Tyson among others. His mastery of the trombone has delighted local music enthusiasts and has provided the opportunity to share his knowledge of music and his instruments of choice with local music students.
