"The astounding Kai Lena followed. Accompanying herself on keyboard, she somehow created a whole soundscape. Occasionally referencing early period Kate Bush, she has crashed onto the local scene as afully-fledged original talent of gigantic proportion. Pixies, angels, butterflies, rainbows and ….. bubblewrap. The amazing, powerful, thought provoking and feministic 'Red' proved to be the centrepiece of a totally absorbing set. We've come a long way since 'I Will Survive'. It would have been undoubtedly selected for BBC broadcast, had the festival field been in Somerset, not West Cheshire. Her voice can be tender, demonstrative and then assertive all within the space of a single phrase. Hers is music with a conscience, be it social, political or connected to sexual politics. An endearing false start heralded the first of two brand new songs, held over to close her set. They were well worth waiting for and demonstrated a less dramatic Kai; more fun, maybe, and in contrast to some of her heavier work. They also showed a mastery of classic pop chord structures. And to achieve her stated ambition to make the sun come out too!
