Singer Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran , a friend of both Hutchence and Yates ( and Geldof's best man at his wedding to Yates ), also wrote a song for him . It was recorded in 1996 and released on the album Medazzaland only a month before Hutchence's death.
Hutchence committed suicide in the midst of Duran Duran's ULTRACHROME LATEX AND STEEL tour in support of their then-newly released album Medazzaland. Before Hutchence's suicide , the band were playing " So long suicide" , a song of Medazzaland. After Hutchence's died , Duran Duran erased the song from their set lists and committed themselves to never playing the song again.
- Duran Duran Lyrics ..U2 and Bono have made several tributes to Hutchence ever since his death :
The 2000 u2 album " All that you can't leave behind " includes a song titled " Stuck in a moment you can't get out of ", which Hutchence's friends Bono wrote about his apparent suicide. The song is written in the form of an argument about suicide in which Bono tries to convince Hutch of the act's foolishness. Bono characterized the song as a good old row between friends , which he felt guilty for never having with Hutchence whle he was alive.Bono also dedicated an emotional performance of "ONE " to Hutchence on the live video " Popmart :live from Mexico city" . During the intro to the song , Bono refers to Hutchence as "a great mate, a great singer". This track can also be heard on the album " Hasta la vista baby ".On both "the popmart" and " the elevetion" tours , Bono frecuently dedicated the song "GONE" to Hutchence by yelling "Hutch!" at the beginnig of the song.
On U2 "Vertigo tour" on December 13, 2006 in Sydney , Bono said "Blow a kiss to Heaven to Michael Hutchence " before playing "With or without you " .INXS has dedicated many performances to their fallen friend:
o On INXS' last tour, they dedicated "Never Tear Us Apart" to Michael and had a screen which showed pictures of him throughout his life.
o A song on INXS' album Switch called "God's Top Ten" pays tribute to Michael and his daughter, Tiger Lily. Another song, "Afterglow," pays tribute to Hutchence alone.God's Top Ten
- Inxs Lyrics ..The song "Private Man" on the Powderfinger album Internationalist is a tribute to Hutchence.
- Powderfinger Lyrics ..At a 2007 show in Adelaide supporting INXS, Simple Minds dedicated "Gloria" to Michael, saying "it's about a woman, but it'd have to be with Michael." At a New Zealand show 2 months later, he also dedicated "Gloria" to the memory of Michael Hutchence.REM pays tribute to HutchenceREM have paid tribute to the late rock star Michael Hutchence and continued a verbal assault on US President George W Bush on their first Australian tour in a decade.
After headlining the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival at Byron Bay over the Easter weekend, the American rock band - who play Sydney tonight - opened a nationwide concert tour on Tuesday night to an appreciative audience in Brisbane.
- REM Lyrics ..The band, like rival supergroup U2, have a wealth of material to choose from with 13 albums in their 25-year history.
On a world tour since last October following the release of their latest album, Around the Sun, middle age hasn't dulled the energy and passion of lead singer Michael Stipe, lead guitarist Peter Buck and bass player Mike Mills.
Stipe burst onto the Brisbane Entertainment Centre stage, his face daubed in blue paint, in an opening salvo highlighted by one of REM's more recent hits, Bad Day, complete with a harmonica solo from the quirky frontman.
"Hello, we're REM and this is what we do," Stipe declared.
Although Around the Sun underwhelmed critics, songs from the album featured heavily in last night's set with the thoughtful Leaving New York receiving the most enthusiastic response.
REM's angry anti-Bush stance was in evidence in two other cuts from Around The Sun - I Wanted To Be Wrong and Final Straw - performed to a backdrop of red, white and blue lights.
Tubular lighting was used to great effect throughout the show with orange glowing as Buck ripped into the anti-war song Orange Crush.
There were red lights for 1991 hit Losing My Religion and yellow for their soulful anthem Everybody Hurts.
Stipe dedicated Strange Currencies to his close friend and "one of my great heroes" Hutchence, the INXS frontman who hanged himself in a Sydney hotel in 1997.On many aftershows in London Indigo during his Earth Tour (21 nights in London), Prince played the song "What You Need" with Maceo Parker on saxophone to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Michael's loss.
