Onyx was born in Oklahoma City. She is now a Houstonian and has been Houstonianized for most of her childhood to adult years. Music has always played a major part in her life. She has had experience from playing the hand bells to playing the piano, making public appearances on local news channels in her childhood years, being a promoter and manager for young talent, a spokesperson for various organizations, vocal coach and arranger, lyricist, background singer, and the list goes on. Onyx states that “music is Peace, Harmony, and Power. Whether we realize it or not, we are all lyricists and composers. Our life is based upon what we write, sing, or play about. If our life is chaotic, we wrote it. The only way we can change a situation is to change self. And the way to change self is to change the tune and lyrics of our life. She also states that music has always been a healing for her and when ever she is in need of comfort, music is the answer.
Onyx has been in several female groups performing at different venues around Houston such as The Red Cat Jazz Café, Groovy Grill Mansion, Plaza 59, The Original Red Rooster, and other venues and events. She is now the CEO and founder of Sista Entertainment (SE). A company that has provided flawless background vocals for over 15 years for both live and studio performances and recordings. As a background vocalist, she had the opportunity to perform at a movie premier “Unspeakable” starring Dennis Hopper in Houston. A charitable event that raised can goods for the Houston Food Bank where she assisted in collecting food for the Houston Food Bank. She has also performed at various political events. Onyx has had the opportunity of opening up for such artist as R & B and Urban singer Angie Stone, all time favorites Lenny Williams and Ollie Woodson(from the Temptations), R & B singer Michael Cooper, Tony Gambrel (from Archie Bell and The Drells) and a host of local Houston based artists.
Not only is she the CEO and founder of SE, but is currently training other talent who inspires to become professional background singers. Onyx states “through SE, you will find vocals that exceed excellence. Professional background singers that make music and performances everlasting. She is currently working on her cd titled “The Black Dahlia”. This anticipated 2008 cd release is hot, ice cold, and bold. Singer Onyx portrays a story that involves mystery, truth, passion and the untold. A woman who is classy, passionate, heart warming, seductive, and an eye catcher.
