Here is what Alice and Snake sounded like in 1972:Hi all: Last time I sent an email out to you, I forgot to send you a link to a Wolfgang's Vault website that is airing a 1974 concert at Winterland in San Francisco featuring my band at the time, Alice Stuart & Snake. It's a long URL. http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/alice-stuart-and-snake -concert/2148-233.html? It came as a real surprise to me that this tape was in Bill Graham's vault of recordings. A real blast from the past...Here is a link to Alice's electronic press kit at Sonicbids:http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.asp?epk_id=51324
View Alice Stuart & the Formerlys's EPKBiography In 2008, Alice Stuart was again honored by the Washington Blues Society. She was given two awards this year: Best Solo/Duo performer and a Lifetime Achievement award. These awards came on the heels of Alice's appearance at the International Blues Competition in Memphis, Tennessee.Alice Stuart has been a solo performer since she first took to the stage at Seattle's Pamir House in 1961. Her first professional appearance was at the Seattle World's Fair in early 1962.By 1964, when Alice was asked to perform at the Berkeley Folk Festival, Alice's repertoire was already very diverse and included Appalachian folk ballads, country songs, and rural Blues. She played autoharp, banjo, and guitar. Her first record "All The Good Times" (Arhoolie Records 1964) was re-released in 2002. It contained 7 songs hat were previously unreleased. This album demonstrates the breadth of Alice Stuart's musical tastes and abilities. The album contains 21 songs, including the self-penned ballad, "Once I Had A Sweetheart".Today, Alice Stuart in a solo performance is a reflection of her entire career. Part folkie, part rocker, and part blues woman, Alice is all entertainer when she "unplugs" for a solo show.Alice was one of the first women of rock to front her own band, write her own songs, and sing and play electric lead guitar. Many of Alice's fans still like her best as a solo acoustic performer, where her shy humor shines and her song interpretations and her song writing ability are well displayed.Alice has that rare ability to make any song her own. Two songs that aptly demonstrate this ability are Statesboro Blues (Willie McTell) and I Feel Like Hank Williams Tonight (Chris Wall) On Statesboro Blues, Alice's guitar skills are on full display and when she sings "Hank" there is seldom a dry eye in the house.Lots of people have asked where has Alice been, after they discover her. Here is a partial list:The Berkeley Folk Festial (1964, '66 & '68) The Sky River Rock Festval (l968 & '69) A Uk, Germany & Holland Tour (1972) The Filmore Ballroom (l973 - 1975) The Winterland (l973 - 1975) A European Tour (1974)The Strawberry Music Festival ( 1991,96,98, 99 and 2000)The Northwest Folklife Festival (1991, 92, 2000, & 04)The Cutting Edge Roots Music Festival (1999) Napa Valley Music Festival (1997 & '99) California World Music Festival (1999) Adams Avenue Roots Festival (2000) Willamette Folk Festival (2000) SXSW Music Conference (2001) Sun Banks Blues Festival (2001) Pike Place Market Festival (2001) Bumbershoot (2001, 03, & 04) Waterfront Blues Festival (2000 & '01) Woodland Park Zoo (2002) The Juan de Fuca Festival (2001 & '03) An Austrialian Tour (2003) The Rizville Blues Festival (2003) Another Austrialian Tour (2004) including: Thredbo Legends of the Blues Festival Newcastle Blues FestivalAlong the way, Alice has played at these venues:The Kingcat Theater, The Tractor Tavern, Jazzbones, The Yale,The Skychurch of the EMP, The JBL Theater of The EMP, The Admiral Theater, The Triple Door, Highway 99, Johno's Blues Bar, as a partial list. And she has taught at:Puget Sound Guitar Workshop (2001 & '02) California Coast Music Camp (2000 & '01)I post that list to ask this question:WHERE DID YOU MEET ALICE?Welcome to the gathering of worldwide fans of Alice Stuart.Alice Stuart, folk singer, decided to become Alice Stuart, electric guitar player, during the several months she spent in the Frank Zappa blues band.To this day, Alice’s fans are divided into two camps: her electric fans and her folk fans. But not unlike Bob Dylan, Alice Stuart has followed her own musical star, sometimes performing a folk song on her electric guitar and sometimes going unplugged all together.Today her band, The Formerlys, represent a gathering of some of the mainstays in the Pacific Northwest music scene, and their latest CD, Freedom, reflects the genre defying blend of styles and influences which are the hallmark of Alice Stuart’s musical heritage. Here is a place for ALL of Alice's many fans and we hope a place to share a love of the music which has inspired Alice throughout her life.Welcome !Here is a link to the CD Baby Podcasts:http://cdbabypodcast.comHere is a link to Alice's electronic press kit at Sonicbids:Full Alice Stuart & the Formerlys EPK™: http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.asp?epk_id=51324
