Four Star Combo

About Me

Our repertoire (original and cover) consists of Rockabilly and classic Honky Tonk Country music. Sound of the band is stripped down and primal, emerging from the PA like a time-warped broadcast from 1956!

Ron Scott (AKA "Bad Ron") - Lead vocals, guitar & harmonica: Ron, who is the founding member of the group, has a long history in the Boston and New England music scene. An early infatuation with the Blues led by degrees to an all-consuming passion for other related American styles: 50’s Rockabilly, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Jump, Swing, Honky Tonk Country, Gospel, and early 60’s Rock and Soul. In 1981 he formed the Rockabilly outfit, The Shakes, who went on to play some 130 gigs in and around Greater Boston and New England. In 1985, Ron started a new venture-The Superfonics, who put in 150 gigs before they called it quits. In 1991 a new band, The RPM's was launched. This would be the most successful venture of the 3, racking up more than 1000 live dates up until 2006. Along the way, these groups played with many legendary Boston Punk & Rock acts, such as the Del Fuego's, Willie Alexander, The Lyres, and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. They also shared the stage with such national acts such as Sleepy LaBeef, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Duke Robillaird, The Paladins, Commander Cody & the Lost Planet Airmen, and Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys. In 2006, Ron relocated to the Washington, DC area.
Eric Hurtt "The Big Hurt" - Lead guitar, vocals: In his own words, "Growing up in the rust belt city of South Bend, Indiana, I developed an early fascination with swing and big band jazz. Mesmerized by the crooning and mellow tone of Tex Beneke and hoping to follow Mickey Rooney’s example in Strike up the Band, I began playing saxophone in grade school. Despite the Indiana legacy of Gennett Records, I was unable to talk my Hoosier classmates into a neighborhood jazz band. In high school I began doubling on guitar in various garage bands, and over the past twenty-odd years I have played variously in northern Indiana/southern Michigan based surf and garage combos Vibrolux and The Churchkey 5, country hopefuls The Bucket Kickers, Indianapolis’ own Tip Top Daddies with Eric Kinsey, and New Orleans’ premier surf and stomp outfit The Swamis and hillbilly boys The Hurtt Brothers. Musical heroes include Lonnie Johnson, Hugh and Karl Farr, Stuff Smith, Red Foley, and just about anything ever committed to wax by Sid Nathan and his mighty King, AudioLab and Federal Records."
Rolf "Hammer" Hanson - Upright bass: As the newest addition to The Combo, Rolf Hanson adds some well-seasoned chops to the band's recipe. Rolf's formative years were split between Maryland and Finland. He later lived in Detroit, California, New York and Europe. Born June 20, 1950, he started fooling with record players and radios at an early age. His musical influences started kicking in around 1956/57 with Rock 'N' Roll, Doo Wop, and the Pop music of the late 50's and early 60's. Folk music, R&B, and the Blues came next. During the 1970's he went back to find everything that he had not been exposed to previously-like Honky Tonk, Rockabilly, Jump Blues, and his favorite: pre-Doo Wop vocal group harmony. Rolf played guitar in some 1960's Rock and Roll bands, but switched to bass in 1968. He has played with Nils Lofgren, The Dubonettes, various Soul and Blues bands, and most recently with The Red Hot Swingin' Johnsons (New Orleans-style Jump, Jazz and Rock 'N' Roll).
"The Oklahoma Kid" - Drums: Born and raised somewhere in Oklahoma, The Kid has lived in California, Denmark, Kansas and Utah, before moving to Virginia at the turn of the century. His desire is to live in the Rocky Mountains, and work on expanding his collection of cowboy boots. Musical heroes include The Blasters, Nick Lowe, X, Johnny Cash, Bob Wills, The Paladins, Buck Owens, Gram Parsons and other music that DOESN'T SUCK!! He has most recently drummed with the Cowboy Angels.

Many of the foregoing names are obvious, but as much as we love these artists, it should be said that we are also deeply influenced by the almost unknown one-hit and no-hit wonders of the genre. We’re talking about names like Joe Wallace, Jett Powers, Jimmy Heap, Vince Taylor & The Playboys, Ray Scott, The Phaetons, Joel Hill, Jackie Gotroe, The Kids From Texas and countless others. We’re also fond of the more obscure repertoire of well-known artists, and we are-of course, proud of our original tunes!!!
