About Me

Dance is just one facet of the entertainment industry. With dancers striving to secure the particular contract of their dreams, a unique personality is deemed essential in order to stand out within a crowd. Joel de Carteret aka JD is no exception. With a quirky and spontaneous approach to movement, JD is in a new breed of entertainer, a league of his own. A personality who is not only passionate about music and the arts, but has greater ambitions as a pioneer who inspires a new legion of dancers to follow in his footsteps…
On first glance it may be easy to assume that JD is an overnight success story. However with a long list of credits too long to mention, it has been a lifetime of passion and determination that has enabled this entertainer to establish a sense of identity within the wider dance community. With a focus on creating his own authentic style of movement, JD not only succeeded to eleventh position within So You Think You Can Dance Australia, but has been reigned as “the Gene Kelly of Hip Hop” by judge and industry professional Jason Coleman..
JD continues his role as ambassador for the next generation through his regular classes and workshops in Melbourne and around the globe.. His personality on camera demonstrates creativity and the ability to reinvent his image according to the project or task at hand. With a difficult upbringing as an adopted child in the Philippines, JD realises that great opportunities are hard to come by and has therefore already made a name for himself both on stage and behind the camera. What sets JD apart from other industry professionals is his ability to identify arising opportunities he is passionate about, and pursue these with sheer determination.
As an all-round creative guy with his own sense of individualism, JD can add several titles to his name including choreographer, performer, teacher, ambassador and in my opinion pure genius! With a career to date that has seen JD travel from Asia to the United States collaborating with internationally renowned dance professionals, JD is a familiar face with the Qantas in-house crew! Breaking in to the world of television as a celebrity choreographer and presenter for a wide array of productions, JD is not one to look out for, but rather one that was discovered many years ago…

Influences: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:What are you doing now since the show 'So You Think You Can Dance'? Living the Dream! LOL I'm doing what I've been doing for the past 9 years, teaching, choreographing and performing. All different types of work have come my way so I'm doing well in the dance area. This year my focus is on hosting, presenting and creating television. I believe in order to get work, you have to go out there and create it. So thats what I've been doing, creating concepts that I'm pitching to production companies, presenting for production companies and also created an online internet events program "So Fresh TV", hosting Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance Opening night party. I've also interviewed dance legend "Wade Robson" which was an such an inspiring interview. Do you still keep in contact with the dancers from 'So You Think You Can Dance'? Well with Facebook there is no excuse really?!? I see most of the SYTYCD peeps from season 1 a lot. Because the industry is relatively small here, we often find ourselves working on a lot of the same jobs. I see and spend a lot of my time in Sydney with my dear friend Courtney and hang out with my boy Hilton. Demi I see randomly in Melbourne out and about. Its really inspiring to hear what everybody is getting up to as I know everyone is using the SYTYCD experience in a positive way.Has the show 'So You Think You Can Dance' brought you any exciting opportunities? The show has definitely brought me in to contact with many different types of people in the industry that are helping me with my focus this year. My goals this year for 2009, one of them being hosting my own television show and continue to choreograph and create for music artists in Australia and Overseas. I was a celebrity choreographer for Paul and Eliza on 'Dance With The Stars', Airtime: Panjo All Stars and featured as an actor on "Raise The Bar" which I choreographed and consulted.Any advice for dancers who are wishing to audition for 'So You Think You Can Dance'? If you are wishing to audition its definitely something you have to train and plan for. Most of the dancers have been dancing for many years. You will need to acquire as much vocab as possible, take different styles of dance and also work on your own style and uniqueness. It is your uniqueness that will capture the judges, the producers and Australia. Be yourself, be true to who you are and audition because you love dancing. Not because you want to be famous.Do you teach dance lessons, if so, where? I teach in Melbourne Monday and Tuesdays in Melbourne. I then travel Australia teaching in different states. Where ever my dance students need me to be.How can I get JD to appear at my school? Best way is to contact me via the website www.gojdgo.biz. Fill out the form and someone will get back to you.
