Gaines, “Blu Chipâ€, the youngest of 4 children, was born in Eastern Shore, Md. In 1985 Blu Chip and his mother moved to CoCoa Beach, Fl. While residing in Coca Beach in 1987 Blu lost his brother to a heart attack. This event would change his life forever. In 1988 Blu and his mother moved to Wilmington, DE. He first began rapping in 1996. He and his friends would have rap battles in the hallways during school. He would always smash his friends in these battles. Blu Chip graduated from Wilmington High School and then went on to attend Delaware Tech a small community college for a year. On October 2, 1998 he had a son Kenya Gaines, Jr. He knew it was time for a change, so he worked hard and did whatever he needed to do to take care of his son. Blu Chip also started to focus on his music more. He was the member of a group called 2 of a Kind, successfully selling 1,000 units. He then decided to begin a solo career. In 1999 he attended the Source Awards where he met a producer by the name of Laron Mayfield from the Bay area. He moved to California to get closer to his goal. He realeased the mixtapes Still in the Kitchen, Long Walk Home, Most Hated, and many others. These projects allowed him to work with artists like Paul Wall, The Game, Juvenile, Suga Free, Peedie peedie, Outlaws, and Sean Paul. These releases helped him get his name buzzing in his home state, the surrounding areas, and in California. His single Get Retarded was released to over 1,000 DJ’s across the country, and also got radio spins and rotation in the clubs in the Bay Area and his hometown. He also had a website www.bluchiponline.com that received over 1,000 hits a day from 92 different countries. Bluchip has been featured on Allhiphop.com, appeared on 106th and park, and local radio shows. He was influenced by artist like Shirley Ceaser, The William Brothers, Biggie, 2-Pac, Jay-Z, and Nas.
