About Me

I am currently in two groups in Seattle: The Cascade Jazz Trio , and Sunmay .

I previously performed with Heliotroupe , The Mud Bay Jugglers , Barbara Donald and Unity , Jeffrey Morgan , The Olympia Symphony Orchestra , Angelsong (San Francisco), The Key (San Francisco), Solid Citizens (Eugene), and I co-founded and performed with The Olympia Chamber Orchestra .

Although primarily a bassist, I've also played congas and percussion for years, with a strong emphasis on Cuban and Haitian folkloric rhythms. My conga chops are rusty, but I use that knowledge primarily as a rhythmic vocabulary for my bass lines.

I have also composed several short film scores, works for chamber orchestra and string quartet, and song forms for jazz improvisation.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Court Crawford
Influences: Anything of beauty or power.

At various times I've studied the masters of the bass, a group I'd define as including Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro, Glenn Moore, Chuck Metcalf, John Cartwright , Charlie Haden, Gary Peacock, Dave Holland, Ray Brown, Eddie Gomez, Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, John Pattitucci, Aladar Pege, Bert Turetsky, David Friesen, James Jamerson, Tony Levin, Chuck Rainey, Jaco Pastorious, Steve Swallow, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell's left hand, Aston Barret, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Carlitos Del Puerto and Tony Banda.

With any grace, their conception has touched mine.
Sounds Like: Good music. Music has yearnings beyond our culturally induced preferences for sub dominant - dominant - tonic. I approach what I play with respect for the song and for our ancestors in the music. I respect the role of the bass harmonically and rhythmically. I aspire to sound like whatever the music I'm playing needs. Guanguanco, Columbia, Yambu, Mambo, Merengue, Mozambique, Samba, Bossa Nova, Funk, Swing, Gospel, Motown, R&B, Dixieland, Cool, Bebop, Country, Folk, Rock, Ambient, Outside Improv - you name it. Just don't say Heavy Metal because every band in that genre after Led Zeppelin was a corprock poser. As a composer, I will throw any spice in the soup to get the flavor my inspiration craves. As a sideman I aim for the sweet spot with a lyrical and full bottom end. I like beats with a booty and a brain.
Type of Label: Major

Corea, Gomez, Moreira, and Laws

I just caught Chick Corea's set at Jazz Alley. When I first heard about the gig, I wasn't so motivated. I got to see Return to Forever a few times in the seventies, and I thought the potential for dis...

I'm reading Eros the Bittersweet. The author is Anne Carson, and she's exploring what Eros meant to the ancient Greeks. So far she's made it clear that the Grecian civilization was the dawn of literac...

Here's the next installment in my ear training program. Another saxophone solo that I've always loved and can't imagine being able to ever play on the bass. I'm chipping away at it, one to two bars pe...

Transcribing Trane

I've always loved John Coltrane's solo on "Someday My Prince Will Come" from the Miles album of the same name, so the last couple of weeks I decided to buckle down and transcribe it. Trane was so hard...

Inspiration and Perspiration

Somebody I greatly respect told me that creating any art is really hard work. The first reason that it is hard is that it takes a lot of practice - the craft itself is not easy. The second, and primar...
