Asexuality: The Making of a Movement

About Me

An asexual is someone who does not experience sexual attraction. Unlike celibacy, which is a personal choice, asexuality is an intrinsic part of who asexuals are. It is their identity. There is considerable diversity within the asexual community. Each person experiences things like relationships, attraction, and arousal somewhat differently. With an unofficial online headquarters at AVEN (The Asexuality Visibility and Education Network), asexuals are pushing their way into the mainstream. Yet many are troubled by this community. Why? Because it turns the conventional perception of sexuality and how we relate to it upside down. It challenges tradition, ideology and our sense of normative behavior. Asexuality: The Making of a Movement will profile four people who are trying to live their lives as asexuals. Each of these characters’ stories are at the heart of the asexual movement, and the stories are universal: How do you deal with life as an outsider?
