“Music makes me feel good,†says seventeen-year-old singer/songwriter Wendy Austyn, who offers a fresh, unique blend of jazz, pop, and alternative music. “Music transports me to a place where I can totally be myself. I want my music to do that for others.†With soul-soothing cadence and lyrics relevant to teen life, Wendy fulfills that ideal.
“Wendy could carry a tune by the time she was knee high,†remembers her mom. Her debut vocal performance at age four astonished the congregation at her grandparents’ country church in Wisconsin as she delivered an adorable rendition of “My Little Heart†without missing a note. After her initial splash, Wendy was often invited to sing solos in church. She participated in children’s theater and vocal groups, and she even sang and danced with a hula group while living in Hawaii.
As her voice matured, Wendy found her place among worship teams and youth choirs, performing at weddings, school events, and military retirement ceremonies. She recently sang the National Anthem at a filming of “Extreme Home Makeover†in Colorado Springs. According to her close friends, “She’ll sing just about anywhere. We love it when she spontaneously bursts into song and dance.â€
Wendy learned music theory during piano lessons at age six, but it wasn’t until she received a guitar for Christmas at age thirteen that she began to discover her own musical creativity. After one month of lessons, Wendy decided to teach herself to play the guitar. “The lessons were for flirting,†she admits. “If I was going to learn to play, I knew I’d have to ignore the ‘hot’ instructor and get busy on my own.†Her determination proved fruitful when she played her guitar and sang in a competition aboard Premiere Cruises “The Music Boat.†Though she didn’t win the competition, the positive affirmation she received validated her talent and expanded her dream of a career in music. She floated home on a compliment from Tom Jackson, who said her voice was “stupid good!â€
Wendy’s current favorite song is “Love Song†by Sara Bareilles because, “her lyrics make sense. She’s artistically unique, and her melody line stands out.†Influenced by popular artists such as Nora Jones, Colbie Caillat, Eisley, and the Hush Sound, Wendy strives to hit her own sweet spot in writing engaging melodies. “A song has to be something people connect with. It should break the mold, take a risk, and still maintain a balance of musical excellence and lyrics that resonate with listeners.â€
When Wendy is not studying, playing volleyball, or performing, she can be found, guitar in her lap, penning her latest inspiration. “Sometimes I write for hours. And sometimes I’ll have an idea for weeks, mulling it over. Then putting it down doesn’t take very long.†Wendy has recently taken several trips to Nashville to record her music and to work alongside some of the industry’s most talented songwriters. She finds it helpful to have someone help complete her ideas and challenge her to aim higher.
Like most teen girls, Wendy is curious about romance. Her recent creation, “Waiting Here for You†showcases her whimsical nature with an upbeat tempo and the lines,
“Beating hearts and walks through the park
only midnight stars will see
They’ll shine high and they’ll twinkle bright
And one will fall on me
Oh it’s a dream, you and me, it’s a dreamâ€
And like most teen girls, Wendy knows that love often takes its time, as the lyrics from “The Game’s Began†convey, “This forbidden fruit is calling my name; But I guess I’ll have to wait; I guess I’ll have to wait for love.â€
Austyn’s original compositions about love and life are honest reflections of her own life experience and dreams. She may have to wait for romance, but she won’t have to wait long for her musical dreams to unfold. Passionate about people, music, and faith, Wendy affirms the real reward is seeing people uplifted. With a rapidly growing myspace fan base, Austyn is a brilliant new talent worth watching.!-START Block to Place Custom Banner at Top of Page-! !-Create div with image.
