About Me

Paul Michael Levesque (born July 27 1969) is an American professional wrestler, better known by the ring name Triple H, an abbreviation of his former moniker, Hunter Hearst Helmsley. He is currently signed to World Wrestling Entertainment promotion on its RAW brand, but since January 2007, he has been inactive while rehabilitating from a torn quadriceps muscle.Early careerLevesque was trained to wrestle by Killer Kowalski. He teamed with fellow Kowalski trainee, Perry Saturn. In 1993, he joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW), wrestling as a heel under the ring name Terra Ryzing. Later, Levesque created the persona Jean-Paul Lévesque, a hastily constructed persona in reference to his surname's French origins, and was asked to speak with a French accent as he could not speak French. During this time he began using his finisher The Pedigree, now one of the most well-known finishing maneuvers in professional wrestling. Many newer fans who do not know about his Jean-Paul Levesque gimmick are unaware of the blue-blood character origins of the move's name. Under this persona, Levesque also briefly teamed with Lord Steven Regal (William Regal). He left in 1995 for the World Wrestling Federation.World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment1995-1997As a continuation of his gimmick in WCW, Triple H started off his WWF career as the Connecticut Blueblood, Hunter Hearst Helmsley. He appeared in taped vignettes talking about how to use proper etiquette up until his wrestling debut which happened on the April 30, 1995 episode of WWF Wrestling Challenge[1].Although he had an impressive streak during the first few months within his debut, his career stalled during 1996, starting off with being mired in a feud with Duke "The Dumpster" Droese following a loss in the Free For All at the 1996 Royal Rumble and being squashed by Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania XII in 81 seconds[2]. Up until that event, he appeared on television each week with a different female valet accompanying him. Sable was his valet at WrestleMania XII, and after his loss to Ultimate Warrior, he took his aggressions out on her. The debuting Marc Mero came to her rescue and this started a feud between the two wrestlers[3].Helmsley was best known backstage as one of the members of the Clique, a group of wrestlers including Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Sean Waltman and Scott Hall who were known for influencing Vince McMahon and the WWF Creative team. Helmsley was in line to win the 1996 King of the Ring tournament, but he was buried and demoted from championship contender to jobber to the stars, after the Madison Square Garden Incident, in which the Clique broke character after a match to say goodbye to the departing Nash and Hall[4]. Despite the punishment, Helmsley did have several successes following the MSG Incident. He found a manager in Mr. Perfect and won his first Intercontinental Championship on October 21, 1996, defeating Marc Mero[3]. When Curt Hennig left the WWF, his departure was explained to be a result of Helmsley turning his back on his manager as soon as he won the Intercontinental Championship. He held the belt for nearly four months before losing it to Rocky Maivia on the February 13, 1997 edition of a special Monday Night RAW, called Thursday RAW Thursday[5]. For a very brief time, Helmsley was accompanied by Curtis Hughes, who played the role of his bodyguard. After losing the Intercontinental title, he feuded with Goldust, defeating him at WrestleMania 13[6]. During their feud, Chyna debuted as his new bodyguard, assaulting Goldust's wife and valet Marlena.Helmsley's push resumed in 1997, when he won the King of the Ring tournament on June 8, 1997 defeating Mankind in the finals[7]. Later that year, Shawn Michaels, Helmsley, Chyna and Rick Rude (who left shortly after the group was formed) formed D-Generation X (DX). Triple H as part of D-Generation X. Left to Right: Rick Rude, Chyna, Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Enlarge Triple H as part of D-Generation X. Left to Right: Rick Rude, Chyna, Shawn Michaels and Triple H.This group became known for pushing the envelope, as Michaels and Helmsley made risqué promos, spawning the catchphrase "Suck It" along with a "crotch chop" hand motion, and sarcastically deriding Bret Hart and Canada. By now, Helmsley fully dropped the "blueblood snob" gimmick and adopted the name of "Triple H", though some wrestlers still do refer to him as Hunter. 1998-1999After WrestleMania XIV, Michaels was forced into retirement due to a back injury sustained at the 1998 Royal Rumble pay-per-view[8], and Triple H took over the leadership position in DX, claiming that his now-former associate had "dropped the ball". He introduced the returning X-Pac the night after WrestleMania and joined forces with the New Age Outlaws, the team of "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn and "Road Dogg" Jesse James[9]. Triple H led the "DX Army" throughout 1998, spawning a series of viginettes where the DX army would "invade" the CNN Building and WCW Offices in Atlanta, culminating in the group nearly crashing an episode of Nitro in Virginia.; this was the first time he had performed as a face in the WWF, and he quickly became one of its most popular wrestlers. It was also during this time that Triple H began feuding with the leader of the Nation of Domination and rising WWF heel, The Rock. This rivalry eventually led to a feud over The Rock's Intercontinental Championship. Triple H defeated The Rock in a ladder match at SummerSlam 1998 to capture the title[10]. He did not hold the title long, however, as he was sidelined with a knee injury. When The Rock won the WWF Championship at the Survivor Series 1998[11], the rivalry between the two continued, but became more of a gang war as DX fought Vince McMahon's Corporation stable, of which Rock was the main star.Triple H received a shot at the WWF Championship on the January 25, 1999 edition of RAW in an "I Quit" match against The Rock, but was forced to quit or see his aide Chyna chokeslammed by Kane. Chyna attacked Triple H after the match and joined the Corporation, betraying him[12]. At WrestleMania XV Triple H wrestled as a face for what would be the last time in several months when he beat Kane with the aid of Chyna, who was thought to have rejoined DX. Later on in the night, he betrayed his long-time friend and fellow DX member X-Pac by helping heel Shane McMahon retain the European Championship, thus turning heel and taking Chyna with him[13]. This decision earned him the hatred of many fans, and helped push Triple H further in the direction of the WWF Championship. Triple H then joined the Corporation, briefly placing him on the same side as The Rock. Unable to get along, The Rock turned on the Corporation and took Triple H's place as a face, quickly rising to further stardom. After Triple H's heel turn in early 1999, he moved away from his "DX" look, taping his fists for matches, sporting new and shorter wrestling trunks, and a shorter hairstyle. His image and his personality changed as he fought to earn a WWF title shot. After numerous failed attempts at winning the championship, Triple H and Mankind challenged WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin at SummerSlam 1999 in a triple threat match. In a contest which featured Jesse "The Body" Ventura as the special guest referee, Mankind won the match by pinning Austin, becoming a three-time WWF champion[14]. The following night on RAW, Triple H defeated Mankind to win his first WWF Championship[12]2000-2001By January 2000, already a three time WWF champion, Triple H had dubbed himself "The Game", implying that he was at the top of the wrestling world, and was dubbed "The Cerebral Assassin" by Jim Ross. (He has claimed that "The Game" tag was initially conceived for Owen Hart.) His feud with Vince McMahon was not well-received, however, and even outraged fans after McMahon won the title from Triple H during an episode of SmackDown![15]. However, the short-lived feud started the Hunter Hearst Helmsley-Stephanie McMahon storyline that carried the WWF throughout the next seventeen months, and this period was known as the "McMahon/Helmsley Era".Triple H worked a program with Mick Foley in early 2000, which ended in a Hell in a Cell match at No Way Out 2000 that sent Foley into retirement[16]. By the time Triple H shockingly pinned The Rock at WrestleMania 2000 (becoming the first heel to walk out of WrestleMania as champion)[17], he was one of the hottest characters in the WWF, being able to generate enormous heat for his entrance and promos alone. He lost the title at Backlash to The Rock[18], but regained it in an Iron Man match at Judgment Day[19] only to lose it back to The Rock at King of the Ring[20]. Hunter then entered into a feud with Chris Jericho which cultimated in a Last Man Standing match at Fully Loaded 2000[21].A Triple Threat Match against WWF Champion The Rock and Kurt Angle[22] led to a hot program between The Game and The American Hero which centered around Angle's infatuation with Stephanie. Many fans were upset when the feud ended without the seemingly-obvious face turn for Triple H.A later feud between Triple H and Steve Austin culminated in a Three Stages of Hell match in which Helmsley defeated Austin. In 2001, Triple H also feuded with Undertaker, who defeated him at WrestleMania X-Seven[23]. He later teamed with his former nemesis Austin to form The Two-Man Power Trip, capturing both the WWF Tag Team Titles and the Intercontinental Championship (twice) by the end of the next Pay-Per-View.The most difficult moment of Triple H's career occurred during the May 21 2001 broadcast of RAW when he suffered a legitimate and career-threatening injury. In the night's main event, he and Stone Cold Steve Austin were defending the Tag Team titles against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. At one point, Jericho had Austin trapped in his Walls of Jericho submission hold. Triple H ran-in to break it up, but just as he did, he suffered a tear in his left quadriceps muscle, causing it to come completely off the bone. Despite his inability to place any weight on his leg, Triple H was able to complete the match, something that his fans and fellow wrestlers saw as an admirable display of dedication to the business. He even allowed Jericho to put him in the Walls of Jericho, a move that places considerable stress on the quadriceps. The tear required an operation, which was performed by famed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, in Birmingham. This injury brought an abrupt end to the McMahon/Helmsley Era, as the rigorous rehabilitation process kept Triple H out of action for over seven months, completely missing the Invasion storyline of WCW/ECW.2002-2003Triple H returned to RAW as a face on January 7 2002 at Madison Square Garden, receiving a tremendous ovation. He soon won that year's Royal Rumble, and thus received a WWF Undisputed Championship match in the main event at WrestleMania X8. At WrestleMania X8, Triple H beat Chris Jericho for the WWF Undisputed Championship. After holding the title for a month, Helmsley lost it to Hulk Hogan at Backlash 2002. Triple H then became exclusive to the SmackDown! roster due to the WWF Draft Lottery and continued to feud with Chris Jericho, culminating in a Hell in a Cell match at Judgment Day.In the interim, between the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, the McMahon/Helmsley era was brought to an official on-screen conclusion. By the time he returned, Triple H's "marriage" to Stephanie was on the rocks, so Stephanie faked a pregnancy in order to get him back on her side. When he learned that it was fake, he dumped her publicly on RAW when they were supposed to renew their wedding vows. Stephanie aligned with Chris Jericho afterward, but was forced to leave action after losing a triple threat on RAW the night after WrestleMania. The "divorce" was finalized at Vengeance.Meanwhile, Triple H's old DX companion Shawn Michaels had made his return to WWE and joined the nWo, and Shawn Michaels and Kevin Nash planned to bring Triple H over to RAW in order to put him into the group. However, Vince McMahon disbanded the nWo following several backstage complications and brought in Eric Bischoff as RAW's new general manager. One of Bischoff's first intentions was to follow up on the nWo's plan and woo Triple H over to the RAW roster. Triple H did indeed jump over to RAW, reuniting with Shawn Michaels, but on July 22, 2002 he turned heel once again by turning on Michaels, hitting a surprise Pedigree on him during what was supposed to be a DX reunion. The following week, Triple H smashed Michaels' face brutally into a car window to prove that Michaels was "weak". These events led to the beginning of a long, heated rivalry between the former partners, and an eventual "Unsanctioned Street Fight" at SummerSlam 2002, in which Michaels came out of retirement and won. Afterwards, however, Triple H attacked him with a sledgehammer, and Michaels was carried out of the ring.Prior to September 2, 2002, WWE recognized only one Champion for both RAW and SmackDown! However, after SummerSlam, champion Brock Lesnar signed a (storyline) deal to become exclusive to SmackDown!, leaving RAW without a champion. RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff then awarded the World Heavyweight Championship to Triple H in the form of the old WCW Championship belt. Triple H made successful title defenses against Ric Flair, Rob Van Dam, Kane & others, but eventually lost the belt to Shawn Michaels in the first ever Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series 2002. He regained the title from Michaels a month later in a Three Stages of Hell match at Armageddon 2002.In January 2003, Triple H formed Evolution with Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and Batista. Its purpose was to include the "greatest wrestlers" of the past (Flair), present (Triple H), and future (Orton and Batista). In one of Triple H's Title defenses, two other members of Evolution succeeded in helping Triple H not only retain the title, but also remove Kane's mask (the match was stipulated as Mask vs. Championship). The group was dominant on RAW from 2003-2004, the height of their dominance occurring after Armageddon 2003 when every member of Evolution won a title. Triple H beat Goldberg to win the World Heavyweight Championship, Randy Orton beat Rob Van Dam to win the Intercontinental Championship, and Ric Flair and Batista beat The Dudley Boyz to win the World Tag Team Championship. Triple H held the belt for most of 2003, feuding with and ultimately defeating former WCW talent including former WCW World Heavyweight Champions Scott Steiner, Booker T, Kevin Nash, and Bill Goldberg in main events.2004-2005Triple H lost his title to Chris Benoit at WrestleMania XX and was unable to reclaim the belt from Benoit afterwards in subsequent rematches, including an exact rematch of the WrestleMania main event between Triple H, Benoit, and Shawn Michaels at Backlash. He would then go on to end his feud with Shawn Michaels in a Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood 2004. After another failed attempt to regain the title he would focus on Eugene beating him at SummerSlam. Triple H then regained the title from former associate Randy Orton at Unforgiven. Following a controversial triple threat World title defense against Chris Benoit and Edge on the November 29 2004 episode of RAW, the World Heavyweight Championship became vacant for the first time.At New Year's Revolution Triple H won the Elimination Chamber to begin his 10th world title reign. At WrestleMania 21, Triple H lost the championship to Batista, and subsequently lost two rematches at consecutive RAW pay-per-views (Backlash 2005 and Vengeance 2005). Following this, Triple H took some time off from wrestling, learning about the corporate side of WWE in preparation for a future full-time executive position as well as to film the future WWE films project Jornada del Muerte.Triple H returned to RAW on October 3, 2005 as part of WWE Homecoming to a tremendous ovation, even though at the time he took his absence, he was a heel. He teamed up with Ric Flair (who had turned face during Triple H's absence) against Chris Masters and Carlito. Triple H and Flair won, but Triple H then turned on Flair with his sledgehammer. Triple H then began a feud with Flair. They met in a Steel cage match at Taboo Tuesday for Flair's Intercontinental Championship, a match that Flair won . However, Triple H defeated Flair in a non-title Last Man Standing match at Survivor Series and ended their feud.2006-2007 DX showing off their signature pose Enlarge DX showing off their signature poseAlthough Triple H failed to win the Royal Rumble match at Royal Rumble to earn a title shot, another championship opportunity arose for Triple H in the Road to WrestleMania Tournament. He won it, granting him a match for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 22.At WrestleMania 22, Triple H and John Cena fought in the main event for the WWE Championship, where Triple H lost via submission. Later that month at Backlash 2006, Triple H was involved in another WWE Championship match, fighting Edge and John Cena in a Triple Threat match, where he lost again. In an act of frustration, a bloodied Triple H used his sledgehammer to attack both Edge and John Cena and then performed a number of DX crotch chops, much to the delight of the fans. Triple H would unsuccessfully attempt to win the WWE title from Cena on numerous occasions, and blaming his shortcomings on Vince McMahon, eventually leading to a feud between the McMahons and Triple H.Shawn Michaels returned on the June 12, 2006 edition of RAW and soon reunited with Triple H to reform their previous wrestling stable, D-Generation X. DX defeated the Spirit Squad at Vengeance 2006 in a 5-on-2 handicap match. DX continued their feud with Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and the Spirit Squad for several weeks. They then defeated the Spirit Squad again at Saturday Night's Main Event in a 5-on-2 Elimination match. They then again defeated the McMahons at SummerSlam 2006, withstanding the attack of several handpicked WWE superstars by Vince McMahon. At Unforgiven 2006, D-Generation X overcame the odds once again, defeating The McMahons and ECW World Heavyweight Champion The Big Show in a Hell in a Cell match (the seventh Hell in a Cell match for Triple H and the third for Shawn Michaels). DX embarrassed Vince by shoving his face in Big Show's backside during the match, and DX won when Triple H broke a sledgehammer over the shoulders of Vince McMahon. At Cyber Sunday 2006 during their feud with Edge and Randy Orton, the fan's selected special guest referee, Eric Bischoff, allowed the illegal use of a weapon to give Rated-RKO the ill-gotten win. At Survivor Series 2006, DX got their revenge when their team defeated Edge and Randy Orton's team in a Classic Elimination Match with a clean sweep. At New Year's Revolution 2007, DX and Rated-RKO fought to a no-contest and during the match Triple H suffered a legit torn right quadriceps (similar to the one he suffered in 2001 but in the other leg). He finished the match despite the injury, just as he did in 2001. A successful surgery was performed on January 9, 2007 and Dr. James Andrews estimated that Triple H would need four to six months of rehabilitation before he can make his in-ring return. Coincidentally, the 2007 tear to his quadriceps occurred five years to the date he made his return on RAW following rehabilitation to his 2001 quadriceps tear. In an interview on WWE.com, Triple H stated that he expects to be back in the ring around SummerSlam 2007.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Michael Shawn Hickenbottom (born July 22 1965) is an American professional wrestler, better known by the ring name Shawn Michaels. He is currently performing on the RAW brand of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but is currently inactive rehabing from a knee injury/(kayfabe) concussions.Michaels is one of the longest tenured performers in World Wrestling Entertainment; having worked in various positions for the company since 1987.CareerEarly careerBorn to a military family on an air base in Chandler, Arizona, Michaels spent a brief part of his early years in Reading, Berkshire, England, but mainly grew up in San Antonio, Texas. In San Antonio, he attended Randolph High School on Randolph Air Force Base.Trained by Mexican professional wrestler Jose Lothario, Michaels debuted in 1984, working with Mid-South Wrestling and later Texas All-Star Wrestling promotion, where he and Paul Diamond were awarded the TAW Tag Team Championship by Chavo Guerrero, Sr..Michaels also wrestled for Central States Championship Wrestling. There, he and tag team partner Marty Jannetty defeated The Batten Twins for the Central States Tag Team Championship, later losing it back to the Battens. Michaels also made several appearances in the Dallas, Texas-based World Class Championship Wrestling throughout 1985.American Wrestling Association (1986-1988)Michaels made his national-level debut in 1986 in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), once again teaming with Jannetty. The pair were billed as "The Midnight Rockers" and won the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice. They also appeared in the Mid-South on loan at this point. In a raid of AWA talent in 1987, The Rockers were signed by a competing promotion: the World Wrestling Federation. However, they were fired two weeks later for "partying too hard" (a misunderstanding, according to Michaels' autobiography). They returned to the AWA, but were re-signed by the WWF a year later.World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (1988-1998, 2002-present)They redebuted on the June 18 1988 episode of Superstars. Because of WWF chairman Vince McMahon's desire to have his performers carry WWF-exclusive monikers, they were repackaged as just "The Rockers".The energetic team proved popular with both children and women, as well as 'smart' fans who appreciated technical wrestling. The team were mid-card stalwarts of TV and pay-per-view shows for the next two years, but never seemed to get a fair chance at the WWF's Tag Team Championships.Their chance belatedly came in October 1990: The Rockers were scheduled to win the WWF Tag Team Championship from The Hart Foundation. Jim Neidhart, half of the championship team, was in the process of negotiating his release from the company. The match was taped with The Rockers fairly winning the belts, but soon after, Neidhart came to a stopgap agreement with management and was rehired. The belts were returned to the Harts, while the change was never broadcast or even acknowledged on TV. When news spread, WWF explained that the original result was void due to a collapsed turnbuckle in the ring during the bout. A buckle had indeed broken, but not to a noticeable or dangerous extent during the match.1992-1993The duo plodded along, eventually splitting on December 2 1991 during an incident on Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake's televised "Barber Shop" talk show segment. Michaels superkicked Jannetty and threw him through a glass window on the "shop" set. Jannetty vanished from the WWF and Michaels turned heel as "The Boy Toy". His nickname was later changed to "The Heartbreak Kid", at Curt Hennig's suggestion. In his new gimmick as a vain, cocky heel named The Heartbreak Kid, he was put together with mirror-carrying manager "Sensational" Sherri, who, according to the storyline, had become infatuated with him. Sherri even sang the first version of his new theme music "Sexy Boy." During that period, Michaels normally wrestled during the first half of house shows, and had his departure announced with the words "Shawn Michaels has left the building" (alluding to the phrase "Elvis has left the building").Michaels failed to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship from Bret Hart in July 1992, even losing the WWF's first ever Ladder match against him at a House show. Still, Michaels was beginning to get over as a heel. He won the WWF Intercontinental Championship from "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith during Saturday Night's Main Event on October 27 1992. Shortly thereafter, he was in a PPV main event for the first time, facing — and losing to — future nemesis Bret Hart, for the WWF Championship at the 1992 Survivor Series.[1] They were moved to the main event after The Ultimate Warrior left WWF suddenly, leaving his tag-team match with Randy Savage against Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect hanging. The "Champion vs. Champion" match stole the show.Michaels and Sherri split at this point, and Jannetty quickly reappeared, leading to several memorable matches. After sneaking past Tatanka in early 1993, Michaels lost his Intercontinental Championship to Jannetty on Monday Night RAW on May 17, 1993.[2] He then regained it on June 6 1993 with the help of his debuting "bodyguard" (and off-air friend) Diesel.[2]After a much-hyped but ultimately disappointing feud with Mr. Perfect, Michaels quit the WWF in September 1993. It was announced that Michaels had failed to defend his belt enough times during a set period; in reality, he had been suspended for testing positive for steroids — a charge that Michaels denies to this day. After turning down WCW's advances, Michaels returned to the WWF and made several appearances in the United States Wrestling Association during a WWF/USWA cross-promotion. He returned to WWF television for November's 1993 Survivor Series, substituting for the arrested Jerry Lawler in a match pitting himself and three of Lawler's "Knights" against Bret, Bruce, Keith, and Owen Hart.[3]1994-1995He soon entered a feud with Razor Ramon, who had won the vacated Intercontinental Title during Michaels' absence. Since Michaels had never been defeated in the ring for the title, he claimed to be the rightful champion and even carried around his old title belt. This feud culminated in a ladder match between the two at WrestleMania X. Michaels lost the match, which featured both his and Ramon's belts suspended above a ladder in the ring.[4] This match won "Match of the Year" awards from Pro Wrestling Illustrated and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. It also earned Michaels a reputation of being the "Innovator of the Ladder Match" when, in reality, it was Bret Hart who brought in the idea two years previously from his experience in Stampede Wrestling.Michaels battled various injuries over the next few months and soon launched the "Heartbreak Hotel" TV talk show segment, mainly shown on WWF Superstars. On August 28 1994, Michaels and his ever more popular sidekick, Diesel, captured the WWF World Tag Team Championship from The Headshrinkers. During their brief time as a tag team, they used a variation of the Headshrinkers' finishing move, where Michaels would finish off their opponent by climbing on Diesel's shoulders and splashing on their opponents. The next day, at SummerSlam 1994, Diesel lost the Intercontinental Title to Ramon when Michaels accidentally Superkicked his bodyguard.[5] This triggered a Michaels-Diesel split, drawn out until the Survivor Series that November due to Michaels' hand injury at the time.[6] Michaels went on to win the 1995 Royal Rumble, where he was the first Royal Rumble participant to win the match from the No.1 spot.[7] This set up a championship/grudge match at WrestleMania XI against Diesel. Michaels recruited Sid as his bodyguard for the build-up, lost the match [8], and was attacked by Sid the following night. As Sid challenged Diesel for the gold, Michaels took time off. He returned to the ring as a 'babyface' in June 1995 and defeated Jeff Jarrett in July for his third Intercontinental Title. This would lead to a title defense against Razor Ramon at SummerSlam 1995, in a Ladder Match, which Michaels won.[9] Around this time, Michaels became the alleged leader of a backstage group known as The Clique/Kliq, which others perceived had sufficient clout with WWF owner Vince McMahon, to become the dominant wrestling figures in the promotion for several years in the mid-1990s. Michaels disputes the perception, saying that McMahon pushed only deserving wrestlers. Shawn's fanbase was later nicknamed "The Kliq" as an inside reference to the real "Clique."In October 1995, he was legitly attacked by several men outside a bar in Syracuse, New York. Shortly afterwards, at the In Your House: Great White North PPV, Michaels forfeited the Intercontinental Title to rival Dean Douglas because he was, according to the WWF, unable to compete. However, Douglas lost the title immediately to Clique member Razor Ramon.[10] Douglas maintained that Michaels could have wrestled that night and simply didn't want to put him over. The next month, during a match with Owen Hart on Monday Night RAW, Owen nailed Michaels with an Enzuigiri kick to the back of Michaels' head. They continued to wrestle, but Michaels collapsed in the ring, supposedly because he had suffered a concussion in the Syracuse incident.[11] The concussion was a work, skillfully kept from most fans at the time.1996-1997After teasing a retirement, Michaels announced that he would be returning to the WWF at the 1996 Royal Rumble match, which he won for the second year in a row.[12] Around this time, Jose Lothario, Michaels' original trainer, became his on-screen manager.Michaels won his first WWF Championship at WrestleMania XII in March 1996, pinning Bret Hart in the 'sudden death' overtime of their a sixty minute Iron Man match, which had ended in a 0-0 tie.[13] As WCW gained momentum due to the signings of Michaels' friends Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, Michaels soldiered on as champion for most of the year, notably overcoming Mankind [14], Vader, [15] and The British Bulldog [16] in pay-per-view battles. At SummerSlam 1996 in his main event WWF championship match with Vader, Shawn notoriously became agitated during the match when Vader misheard Shawn and didn't move out of the way on his subsequent elbow drop. Shawn changed direction in mid air upon realising Vader wasn't going to move and then shouts loudly "move!" whilst stamping legitimately on Vader's head. Shawn admitted in a later recorded shoot interview that Mankind suggested that during their match at In Your House: Mind Games, Shawn should re-enact his genuine heat with Vader and perform the same stamp sequence seen at SummerSlam a month earlier.Michaels' title reign colorfully ended at the 1996 Survivor Series in November, where he lost to Sycho Sid, his former bodyguard, at Madison Square Garden in a face vs. face match. This match was notable for the New York fans cheering for Sid when he hit both Michaels and Jose Lothario with a television camera and cheering again when he won the match and championship.[17] A flu-ridden Michaels recaptured the belt from Sid in January at the 1997 Royal Rumble in front of his hometown fans in San Antonio.[18]Michaels was supposed to defend his title at a WrestleMania 13 rematch with Bret Hart but he gave up the title on a special episode of RAW dubbed Thursday RAW Thursday[19], broadcast live on the USA Network on February 13, 1997. This speech was regarded as controversial, as Michaels was allegedly unwilling to lose to Bret Hart at WrestleMania. Michaels had been told by doctors that a knee injury was bad enough to have to retire, and knowing that Michaels' knee was bad, Bret Hart mapped out a novel ending for their planned WrestleMania match: Hart would catch Michaels' right leg as he attempted to execute his superkick finisher and twist it. Michaels' leg would thus 'break', complete with planted 'snapping' sounds coming from under the ring. The ending would allow Michaels to 'lose' the title without quitting or being pinned, and also would allow understandable time out.[citation needed] In the speech, Michaels contemplated thoughts of retirement and stated that he "had to find his smile again", which he had "lost" somewhere down the line. In the end, Bret Hart resumed his feud with Steve Austin for WrestleMania 13, and Michaels did color commentary at the event.[20]After knee surgery by Dr. James Andrews, he miraculously returned a few months later, briefly teaming with Steve Austin to win the WWF Tag Team title. However, after a real life backstage fight with Bret Hart, Michaels quit the WWF, until Vince McMahon convinced Michaels otherwise, and gave him the role of a heel.At SummerSlam 1997, Michaels officiated the WWF title match between WWF Champion The Undertaker and Bret Hart. The match ended in controversial fashion, with Michaels nailing Undertaker with a chair (unintentionally, as he was aiming for Hart after Bret spat in his face). Michaels was then forced to award the title to his nemesis, Hart, setting the stage for their match at Survivor Series.[21] Michaels' striking of the Undertaker with a chair began a feud between the two men. In October, at In Your House: Badd Blood, Michaels and Undertaker participated in the very first Hell in a Cell match, which saw Michaels falling off the side of the 15-foot high structure through a table. Michaels won the match with the help of the debut of the Undertaker's brother Kane.[22] From left to right: Rick Rude, Chyna, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H in 1997 as the original DX. Enlarge From left to right: Rick Rude, Chyna, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H in 1997 as the original DX.In the summer, Michaels joined forces with real-life friend, Hunter Hearst Helmsley and Hunter's then-girlfriend, Chyna to form D-Generation X. The group would engage in rebellious behavior, such as pointing to their penis' and telling fans to "Suck It". Moving away from the family-oriented product, this marked the beginning of the WWF Attitude Era. Michaels also began re-feuding with Bret Hart's reformed The Hart Foundation, which was now a pro-Canada stable. Michaels would taunt The Hart Foundation and Canada by engaging in acts, such as blowing his nose with and humping the Canadian Flag. In his book, >Heartbreak & Triumph>, Michaels claims the flag desecration was Bret Hart's idea.Michaels' feud with the Hart Foundation culminated in a title shot at the 1997 Survivor Series against Bret Hart in what is thought to be the most controversial match in wrestling history. Michaels came out of this match, known "affectionately" by fans as the Montreal screwjob, as the WWF World Champion.[23] Michaels thus became the only wrestler to hold both the World Championship and the European Championship at the same time. However, he would have himself pinned by Triple H in December in a farcical match, making Hunter the European Champion.[24]1998-InjuryIn 1998, a back injury that Michaels received in the Casket match against the Undertaker at the 1998 Royal Rumble [25] (where Michaels took a back body drop to the outside, smashing his lower back on the casket causing him to herniate two discs and crushing one completely) forced Michaels into retirement after losing the WWF Championship to Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV.[26] Prior to losing the belt, Michaels would, along with DX allies, make regular appearances much like Steve Austin did the previous year after injuring his neck at SummerSlam. Wrestlers such as Bret Hart, as Michaels reveals in his autobiography, would be doing interviews on live television claiming that Michaels was faking his whole injury. Bret later apologized for these events.Michaels would return to the WWF on November 23 1998, but not as a wrestler; instead, he replaced Sgt. Slaughter as the WWF Commissioner, joining Vince McMahon's Corporation stable as a heel.[27] Throughout late 1998 and early 1999, Michaels would make regular TV appearances, booking matches, stamping down his authority, and sometimes deciding the outcome of matches. In early 1999, Michaels turned face and re-joined D-Generation X, but disappeared from WWF television for a few months, and by the time he had returned DX had broken up.Michaels would make occasional appearances on WWF television as commissioner as a face during the spring and summer of 1999. He was supposed to turn heel once again during the premiere episode of SmackDown! on August 26 1999 when, while serving as a special guest referee, he superkicked The Rock, allowing Triple H to retain the WWF Championship.[28] However, Michaels would not appear on WWF television until May 21 2000, as a face, to officiate the Iron Man match between the Rock and Triple H.[29] He would make one last appearance a month later, when he would hand over the role of commissioner to Mick Foley, becoming the official spokesperson for the WWF. Michaels then disappeared from WWF television for nearly a year.Michaels' prolonged absences were the result of his opening of the Shawn Michaels Wrestling Academy in early 1999. In February 2001, Michaels signed a multi year contract extension with the WWF.2002-Return to RAWIn 2002, Michaels returned to wrestling, brought in by Kevin Nash as a new member of the nWo.[30] After the nWo was disbanded, Triple H apparently wanted to mend ties with Michaels. This was solidified when Michaels beseeched Triple H to return to RAW. Later on, they came down to the ring with their D-Generation X music and attire. When they were about to do their trademark "Suck It" taunt, Triple H nailed Michaels with the Pedigree.[31] A week later, Triple H attacked Michaels from behind in a parking lot and put his head through a car window.[32] Michaels surprised everyone by challenging Triple H to "a fight" (a non-sanctioned match) at SummerSlam 2002, which Triple H accepted.Michaels returned to the ring to wrestle a match against Triple H at SummerSlam 2002, laying the foundation for a feud that would last for years. This match was noted for Michaels' emotional in-ring return after more than four years on the shelf. Michaels won the SummerSlam match but was attacked with a sledgehammer by Triple H after the match.[33]At Survivor Series 2002, Michaels won the World Heavyweight Championship from Triple H in the first-ever Elimination Chamber match, which also featured Rob Van Dam, Kane, Chris Jericho, and Booker T. Michaels eliminated both Jericho and Triple H to win the match.[34] A month later, Michaels lost the World Championship to Triple H in a Three Stages Of Hell match at Armageddon 2002.[35]2003-2004Michaels then proceeded to feud with Chris Jericho. On January 13 2003, Jericho won an over-the-top-rope challenge to select his entry number for the Royal Rumble, choosing number two in order to start the match with Michaels [36], who had already been named number one. At the Royal Rumble, Jericho, with the help of Christian, eliminated Michaels.[37] Michaels defeated Jericho at WrestleMania XIX. After the match, HBK offered his hand to Chris Jericho who, instead of shaking it, hugged Michaels. At first it seemed like good sportsmanship by Chris Jericho but he quickly kicked Michaels in the groin.[38]Michaels then formed a tag team with the returning Kevin Nash and feuded with Triple H's Evolution stable. At SummerSlam 2003 he competed in the second-ever Elimination Chamber Match, which also featured Randy Orton, Kevin Nash, Chris Jericho, Goldberg, and eventual winner, World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H. During the match, he helped Chris Jericho eliminate Kevin Nash, which prompted Nash to attack both men before exiting the chamber. Later in the match, Michaels was eliminated by Goldberg.[39] He then went on to feud with Evolution member Randy Orton, who would defeat him at Unforgiven 2003.[40] Michaels then had short feuds with Mark Henry and the new World Heavyweight Champion Goldberg before joining Steve Austin's Survivor Series Team. At Survivor Series 2003, Team Austin (Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, and The Dudley Boyz) faced Team Bischoff (Scott Steiner, Mark Henry, Chris Jericho, Christian, and Randy Orton). During the match, Evolution member Batista interfered and gave Michaels the Batista Bomb, costing him the match.[41] Michaels would go on to defeat Batista at Armageddon.[42]Michaels went on to be in the main event of WrestleMania XX as part of an ongoing feud with Triple H, where he came up short in a match against Triple H and Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship.[43] At Bad Blood in June, Michaels lost to Triple H in a Hell in a Cell match.[44] On the Raw after Bad Blood, Kane attacked Michaels with a steel chair, injuring him (kayfabe) in the process.[45] Michaels made his return at Unforgiven and defeated Kane in a No Disqualification Match.[46] Two months later, he lost a World Heavyweight Championship match against Triple H (after Edge interfered) at Taboo Tuesday 2004 when the fans voted for him ahead of Edge and Chris Benoit to face Triple H one more time.[47] Following this, Michaels was out of action for a few months with a legit torn meniscus.2005-2006Michaels returned in January 2005 [48] as the special guest referee in the Elimination Chamber Match (which featured Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Edge, Randy Orton, Batista, and eventual winner Triple H) at New Year's Revolution 2005. During the match, Michaels Superkicked Edge, starting a feud between the two.[49]At the 2005 Royal Rumble, Michaels was defeated by Edge, who pinned him using the ropes for leverage.[50] Michaels went on to compete in the Rumble match later that night and eliminated Kurt Angle. In retaliation, Angle returned to the ring and eliminated Michaels and then put Michaels in the Ankle Lock.[50] As a result of what happened at the Royal Rumble, Michaels issued a challenge to Angle for a match at WrestleMania 21, which Kurt Angle accepted when he appeared on RAW to attack Michaels.[51] The next Monday night on RAW, Jannetty and Michaels had a one time reunion as The Rockers and defeated La Résistance.[52] Three days later on SmackDown!, Angle defeated Jannetty with the Ankle Lock.[53] To send a "message" to Michaels before WrestleMania, Angle also put HBK's former manager Sensational Sherri in the Ankle Lock on SmackDown! on March 24th.[54] At WrestleMania 21 on April 2 2005, Angle defeated Michaels by submission, again with the Ankle Lock.[55]The next night on RAW, Muhammad Hassan and Daivari came out to confront and assault Shawn Michaels.[56] The following week, Michaels approached RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff demanding a handicap match with Hassan and Daivari. Bischoff refused but told Michaels to find a partner and he would grant a match. Michaels then made a plea for Hulk Hogan to come back and team with him.[57] On the April 18 2005 episode of RAW, Hassan again led an attack on Michaels until Hogan appeared to save Michaels and accept his offer.[58] At Backlash 2005 Hassan and Daivari lost to Hogan and Michaels when Daivari was pinned.[59] Hassan would blame and attack Daivari the next evening on RAW for the loss.[60]On the July 4 2005 edition of RAW, Michaels and Hulk Hogan fought Kurt Angle and then-Intercontinental Champion Carlito in a tag team match. During the post-match pose, Michaels hit Hogan with his Sweet Chin Music, knocking Hogan to the ground and turning Michaels heel for the first time since returning in 2002.[61] The following week on RAW, HBK appeared on the Piper's Pit where he superkicked the host Roddy Piper [62] and then challenged Hulk Hogan to a match at SummerSlam 2005.[63] Prior to SummerSlam 2005, neither Hogan nor Michaels had lost in a one-on-one match at SummerSlam. Hogan defeated Michaels at SummerSlam. After the match Michaels extended his hand to him, saying "I needed to know, and I found out" and he and Hogan shook hands. Michaels left the ring to allow Hogan to celebrate with the crowd and Michaels turned face once more.[64]Michaels began a feud with Chris Masters. The pair faced each other in a match at Unforgiven 2005 where Michaels would win via pinfall.[65] At WWE Homecoming, HBK wrestled Kurt Angle to a 2-2 draw in a 30-minute Iron Man match.[66] At Taboo Tuesday 2005, Michaels would win the fans choice for the second year running and become a part of the Triple Threat Match with John Cena and Kurt Angle. Cena would win and retain the WWE Championship.[67]On the December 12 2005 edition of RAW, Shawn Michaels competed against The Big Show for his shot in the Elimination Chamber at New Year's Revolution, in which he won by DQ when Triple H hit him with a chair for that exact purpose.[68] Shawn Michaels also appeared at the Tribute to the Troops where he defeated Triple H with Sweet Chin Music in a Boot Camp Match.[69]On the following RAW, Vince McMahon lauded Michaels for his part in the Montreal screwjob. Michaels said he was only being loyal to his company, but said he'd moved on and McMahon should move on as well. McMahon told Michaels he can "screw" him like he screwed Bret Hart [70], and he began setting unusual stipulations for Michaels' matches and interfering on behalf of Michaels' opponents.[71] At New Year's Revolution, Michaels competed in the fourth Elimination Chamber Match (which also featured Chris Masters, Carlito, Kurt Angle, Kane, and eventual winner, WWE Champion John Cena). During the match he eliminated Kurt Angle, before getting eliminated himself by Carlito.[72]During the 2006 Royal Rumble, to which Michaels entered twenty fifth, he eliminated MNM and Shelton Benjamin in succession to make it into the final six. At that point, Mr. McMahon’s music hit, and the WWE Chairman made his entrance. As HBK stared down McMahon, Shane McMahon made a surprising appearance, attacking Michaels from behind and eliminating him from the match. An irate HBK ran back into the ring and nailed Triple H with Sweet Chin Music before chasing the McMahons to the locker room.[73]After several weeks of attacks and stipulations, Michaels confronted McMahon in the ring and challenged him to a match. McMahon refused and attempted (unsuccessfully) to force Michaels to sign retirement papers [74], after which Vince and Shane McMahon knocked HBK out with a steel chair [75], followed by Mr. McMahon booking a match between himself and HBK at WrestleMania 22.[76] During a handicap match against the Spirit Squad Michaels former partner Marty Jannetty came down to help Michaels.[77] Vince McMahon offered Jannetty a contract if he would "kiss his ass." The next week on RAW Jannetty refused and took Chris Masters' "masterlock challenge" instead. Michaels tried to help Jannetty, which ultimately ended in Shane McMahon forcing a groggy Michaels to kiss Vince's ass.[78]Michaels and Shane McMahon then met in a Street Fight at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event. Throughout the match, Vince interfered, allowing Shane to get the upper hand. However, Michaels kept kicking out and refused to submit and again got the upper hand by superkicking Shane, but Vince knocked the ref down before the three count. Michaels went after Vince McMahon, which gave Shane enough time to hit Michaels with a low blow from behind. Shane applied the Sharpshooter, and Vince McMahon immediately ordered for the bell to be rung, even though Michaels didn't tap out; an allusion to the Montreal screwjob.[79]On the RAW before WrestleMania, McMahon made a match between himself and WWE Champion John Cena. The stipulation was that Triple H would be handcuffed in McMahon's corner while Michaels was handcuffed in Cena's corner. During the match, McMahon low blowed Cena and freed Triple H with a second pair of keys. Triple H and McMahon then used a sledgehammer and a steel chair, respectively, to attack Cena and the handcuffed Michaels.[80]Despite interference from The Spirit Squad and Shane McMahon, Michaels defeated Mr. McMahon at WrestleMania 22 in a bloody No Holds Barred match. The match is noted for being the start of the DX reunion that was soon to come.[81] At Backlash 2006, Michaels (with "God" as his tag team partner) lost to Vince and Shane McMahon with help from the Spirit Squad in a no DQ match that saw Michaels suffer a partially broken nose.[82] Michaels would go on to get some revenge on the Spirit Squad in various ways, but by May 22 2006 the Squad would, in storyline, injure Michaels' knee, an angle that was written so Michaels could have surgery on his knee, which had been legitimately injured for some time.[83]Return of D-Generation X Michaels displaying the DX "X" Enlarge Michaels displaying the DX "X" DX showing off their signature poses Enlarge DX showing off their signature posesIn 2006, a series of events took place which suggested a reunion of Shawn Michaels and Triple H as D-Generation X starting at WrestleMania 22 where both Shawn Michaels and Triple H performed the crotch chop during their matches.[84] The two continued to deliver chops in the following episodes of WWE RAW as Michaels feuded with Vince McMahon and Triple H went for the WWE Championship, repeatedly butting heads with Vince McMahon in the process. On the June 12 2006 edition of RAW, DX officially reunited. During Triple H's gauntlet match against the Spirit Squad, Shawn Michaels came in to help Triple H, and the two did the DX "crotch chops."[85] At Vengeance 2006, DX defeated the Spirit Squad in a 5-on-2 handicap match.[86] After the win, the group continued its sophomoric antics at the expense of The Spirit Squad, Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, and Jonathan Coachman for several weeks. They then defeated the Spirit Squad at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event in a 5-2 elimination match [87], and went on to defeat The McMahons (Vince and Shane) at SummerSlam 2006.[88] They then again defeated The McMahons, but this match also involved Big Show in a Hell in a Cell match at Unforgiven 2006.[89]At Cyber Sunday 2006 DX took on Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton). The fan-selected referee Eric Bischoff allowed the illegal use of a steel chair to give Rated RKO the ill-gotten win, and the plaudit of being the first tag team to defeat DX in a tag team match since their reformation in June 2006[90]. However, at Survivor Series 2006, Team DX emerged victorious, in a clean sweep of Team Rated-RKO[91].2007At New Year's Revolution 2007, Michaels' partner, Triple H suffered a (legit) torn right quadriceps during their match with Rated-RKO.[92] Rated-RKO claimed victory over DX, citing the injury as the "end" of DX.[93] On January 15, 2007 HBK lived up to his vow of "dealing" with RKO when he took out Orton with a con-chair-to after a handicap match against Orton and Edge.[94]On the January 29, 2007 edition of RAW, Michaels captured the World Tag Team Championship for the fourth time from Rated-RKO alongside WWE Champion John Cena.[95] He then won a Triple Threat Number One contender's match on another edition of RAW to earn a shot at the WWE Championship. On April 1st at WrestleMania 23, Michaels was defeated by Cena with the WWE Championship on the line, after he was forced to submit to the STFU.[96] The next night on RAW, Michaels and Cena competed in two back-to back 10 team battle royals, winning the first against Booker T and Finlay, and lost the tag team title in the 2nd battle royal when Michaels threw Cena over the top rope. The eventual winners were the The Hardys.[97]Michaels feud with Cena continued and he faced off with Cena, Edge, and Randy Orton in a Fatal Four Way match at Backlash 2007 for the WWE Championship. Cena retained the title once again when Michaels hit the Sweet Chin Music on Cena causing him to fall on Randy Orton.Michaels was defeated by The Great Khali in a no disqualification #1 contender's match when he was choke bombed through the announce table causing the referee to end the match. Michaels then entered a feud with Randy Orton when Orton claimed that he could beat Michaels. Michaels then faced off against Randy Orton at Judgment Day 2007. The week before the match on RAW, Michaels was attacked by Orton after his match with Edge and was attacked during Judgment Day backstage by Orton, which contributed to his injury from The Great Khali. At Judgment Day, Orton defeated Michaels when he collapsed during the match. Michaels was then was joined by his wife in the ring and taken out of the arena on a stretcher.
