About Me

I first got into traditional music (Manks / Celtic) over 30 years ago and I've had some great fun over these years and have had the pleasure of working with all sorts of musical alliances over that time including such groups as the original Phynnodderee (best forgotten!) in 1978, Bwoaie Doal (1979 - 1990s), Kiaull S'odjey (1982 ish!), Mactullagh Vannin 1984 to date, (with a couple of 'brief' breaks!). I have been lucky to have worked with such people as Charles Guard, Emma Christian, Máire Breatnach, Niall Ó Callanán, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Marlene Hendy, Dilys Sowrey (nee Kaighin), Kirsty & Katey Lawrence, Tom, Luke, Caz & the Reeling Stones to name but a few, as well as playing with some of the Island's (Mann) most amazing and talented performers. *****************************************************I'm into all kinds of music and I'm really excited about what's been happening on the Manx front over the last few years, there are some amazing talents out there - King Chiaullee, The Reeling Stones, Pobble and a host of up and coming individuals who are yet to leave their mark. *****************************************************I love the Island, its culture, landscape and her people. I also like such pursuits as fishing, getting out to sea (when I get the chance on whatever type of vessel), spending time with friends, and the people that are important to me (they inspire me in so many ways!), and drinking Guinness (if you're asking!). I'm still working on ideas for a solo album (yes still!), but the trouble is - these keep changing! It's my ambition to now make the time to get this done before it's too late! (It's slow progress though!)**************************************************** *I'm also looking forward to the up and coming talent out there and I have countless unexplored musical avenues to go down, and am keen to follow these paths before they disappear! Another ambition is to lead a healthier life style (it's a struggle!) and to lose some weight. I may even contemplate going to a gym!*****************************************************All in all though, I consider myself really lucky, and despite what life throws up at you, I have some wonderful friends. I'm very grateful for the many wonderful times I've had with some truly lovely people. I'm looking forward to a new chapter in my life and to meeting the people not yet met! ***************************************************** As yn red s'jerree, ta chree mooar aym er ny chengaghyn Cheltiagh as Gaelg er leah - Cum seose y Ghaelg! (Ta croí mor a'm ar na teangachan Cheilteach a's Gaeilg, Gaeilge a's Gaidhlig ar leath - Cum suas a' Ghaeilg!) *****************************************************..

Band Members: Peddyr (Peadar) Cubberley - Flute & Whistles (Mactullagh Vannin), Sue-Ling Jaques - Guitar (Mactullagh Vannin), Tom Callister - Fiddle & Bouzouki (Reeling Stones), Caz Dougherty - Bass & Low Whistle (Reeling Stones), Luke Melvin - Drums, Bodhran & Cajon (Reeling Stones) *********************Back in the mid-70s, a chance visit to a music session at the Central Hotel (Thie Bouyr) in Peel brought Peddyr into contact with Manks traditional music for the first time. "Likened to the road to Damascus for the young and impressionable Peddyr", he was inspired to take up an instrument and start learning Manks Gaelic. Peddyr made this venue his regular port of call on a Saturday night and cut his teeth on Manks trad at the early stages of the revival. *********************He's never looked back since that chance encounter and has gone on to perform at many feillaghyn (festivals) as cooishyn (and functions) throughout the Celtic nations and beyond including Brittany, Galicia and even England! *********************"Once I’d delved into the music and tongue of my Manks heritage, I found that she fit like a glove - a glove which I still wear firmly today." *********************
Influences: Over the years, it would be fair to say that my influences have come mainly form Irish bands such as the Bothy Band, Planxty, Stocktons Wings, Clannad, Moving Hearts and some of the individuals from within those bands. Also, Breton music. I'm always keen to get a trip to Brittany whenever I can to soak up the fantastic atmosphere, music and crepes at a FEST-NOZ!I'm also very fortunate in having had the chance of being tutored by Mary Bergin, Miko Russell and Dan O' Dowd when they visited the Island many years ago! ********************* Almost everyone I have come into musical contact with has influenced me in some way. I continue to be inspired and influenced by many of today’s musicians - young and old – it’s a great musical world we live in! ********************* It must be said also that the environment - landscapes, seascape and people who live in them as well as friends are also a major source of inspiration and influence. ********************* In addition to the above I studied music to degree level gaining a combined honours BA in Music & Music Technology *********************
Sounds Like: QUOTES - "It is a source of constant surprise to people outside the Isle of Mann that we possess such a wealth of beautiful and fascinating traditional music." - Charles Guard ********************* Of Mactullagh Vannin's self titled album (1986/1992) - ..."Also of importance on this recording is the inclusion of four of Peddyr Cubberley's compositions. Cubberley has emerged as one of the most important composers in the Manx idiom. - Cliff Mcgann ********************* Several of Peddyr's compositions have been recorded by other artists such as King Chiaullee, Skeeal, Charles Guard, Mactullagh Vannin etc.
