pianocircus have recently commissioned two short pieces from Colin (Ebb Cast and Squiggle Zipper), funded by the prsf, which have been extremely successful artistically as well as opening up possible new directions for the ensemble in terms of sound-worlds and the use of technology. Colin’s work in the last few years has continually engaged with the major issues in new music. His work explores ways in which electronica and scoring for instrumental playing merge, how improvisation and collaboration function as part of composed music, and how aesthetics from popular music (in its conception, the recording and the presentation) can impact on new scored work. The new music for this project has been created over the last year with Colin working in close consultation with Bill exploring ways that improvised drumming, and groove-based drumming can be harnessed within composed structures. After a very successful ‘try-out’ gig at London’s Cobden Club 21st September, there will be a few more warm-up gigs and a short tour next year. Look out for further details.
