Mark was doing the "Jazz Devils Groove Show".A mixture of acid jazz, Jazz rock etc. and James was doing Chill /Dance Doof type stuff: "Transmissions "and "Beat in the Street". Mark says:" I'd finish my radio show and then go home and listen to James's show with my girlfriend. I wasn't much into the doof stuff but the electronica started to interest me as I hadn't really caught on to it at this point but the imaginative possibilities got me …..The way you could sort of go into a trance and the world would disappear..". Sharing a mutual interest in recording and mixing the two began to build their own little studios and trying out different synths and other software programs. The fun of it was you could just put down ideas and play with sound like an artist might splash on color with a brush. They began to realize that with a lot of hard work and after many years creating their own tunes and upgrading equipment: the sounds started to approach "studio" quality. James became more prolific in creating the background "canvas" and would give Mark the tracks to work on. Adding mainly guitars to color the audio palate and steer the listener into some sort of melodic focus the results were quite astonishing as the pieces emerged like they had been conceived as one . Although never working to a strict formula the techniques of mixing the sound seemed to work and the Orbital Orange "sound" was born : a mixture of electronica and dance as reflected by James previous work as a DJ working in Melbourne night clubs in the 90's like the Metro and Redheads etc. And mixed with that: Jazzy and rock type phrases from Marks guitar. Influenced by a wide range of music Mark draws from Jazz rock fusion, classical rock and acid jazz feels. He likes to immerse himself in the music and then just improvises over the top recording often the final guitar bits being recorded in one take. "I just try and concentrate very deeply when I'm playing and just let my innate feelings take over what I play. I don't think keys or scales or anything I just sort of go into a trance record from start to finish and then listen to it back. I like to put the music away for a couple of weeks and not play it at all then when you come to listen to it again it's like I am listening to it like someone else playing it. I can then be more critical and say: "this is shit" or "I think I nailed it". We really try to be very critical of our work and a lot of stuff doesn't make it in the end. I suppose about 60 percent of the tunes we are happy with, the rest we just ditch. Being creative is a process that depends on many things: mood, luck, experience, concentration and sheer hard work. A lot of our friends probably think that we do nothing most of the time but there are times when we're banging down tunes and we look outside and its daylight! What happened to the time? I guess it just disappears when you're having fun! "Both are very pleased with this first CD "Launch Procedure ".Some people say they like soundtracks to a movie inside your head. Enjoy and if you like it tell others and spread the word. From: <
