About Me
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT:
Jasper the Colossal is a four-piece, all female band. They write 2 minute songs (on average) and have been described as everything from garage rock to post punk to indie. They are entirely self managed. Thanks to their wits and the kindness of strangers, they successfully completed a short, east coast tour in 2008, and a two week tour along the southwest coastline in the summer of 2009. They have a 7 song E.P. titled "Prehistoric" that was recorded by Randy Burh at Team Human Studio in Dayton OH. You can purchase the E.P. at shows, as well as T Shirts and stickers and various what-not. Everyone in the band works day jobs to pay the rent, and every cent made from shows and merch sales goes back into the band.
WHERE WE'VE BEEN:
Jasper the Colossal is proud to have played various venues around Dayton OH, including The Pearl, The Nite Owl, Tumbleweed, Up On Main, The 88 Club, Canal Street Tavern, Jimmie's Cornerstone, Oregon Express, The Southpark Tavern, and The Dayton Dirt Collective, as well as being a part of a few birthday parties, Dayton Music Fest, Urban Nights, and Ladyfest Dayton. Outside of their hometown, they have played The Knitting Factory in Manhattan NY, Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park NJ, Trash Bar in Brooklyn NY, The Cup and Saucer in Cincinnati OH, The Manhattan Theater in Wilmington OH, Cafe Burbon Street, Scarlet and Grey and Bernies Distillery in Columbus OH, as well as completing a southwest tour that involved various venues in Tennessee, Texas, Arizona, and Southern California. They have played with some amazing Dayton bands as well as national acts including Broadcast Live!, The Dollyrots, Murphy's Law, The Slackers, Miss Derringer, and Girl In A Coma.
WHERE WE HOPE TO GO:
The ladies of Jasper welcome a demanding tour schedule. Just like every other musician, they would like to make music a career. Except, unlike some musicians, they are willing to put the sweat into making it happen. Jasper is not hoping for a major record deal (although they wouldn't turn it down either!). Instead they hope to be able to one day play any venue that will have them, as often as they can. One thing is for certain, they're not giving up any time soon.
WHAT WE WOULD LIKE FROM YOU:
Come to a show. Dance your legs off. Enjoy yourself.
WHAT WE PROMISE YOU:
An energetic show. Original music in an original style. The promise that at least one member will fall over from exhaustion, only to get right back up to finish. One of us will be ill...we're notorious for that.
WHO WE ARE:
Moriah- One of the founding members of Jasper the Colossal. She has had a passion for music since a young age, and was constantly looking for a band that would fit her wants and needs as a musician. She then began playing with Ian Spencer, and started to lay the foundation of what Jasper is today. Moriah has an interesting style of guitar playing, and her influences range everywhere from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs to Tegan and Sara to Rancid.
Nicki- She brings solid band experience and know-how. She has been a member of the band The Sics for over 3 years, and is still currently a member. Nicki and Moriah had been friends since childhood, and the ideal person for the job. Luckily, she decided to take a chance on something a little lighter than she was used to playing. She brings a strong punk edge to the band with influences like the Bouncing Souls and and Bad Religion.
Paige- Paige moved to Dayton from Cincinnati and found herself without a band, that is, until Jasper caught her eye. She has been singing and/or playing guitar in bands since she was 15 (4 years in a power pop band named Tabloyd) and was desperate to be making music again. She met Ian and Moriah through Ian's girlfriend, whom eventually talked them into letting Paige try out. With no experience in a punk band, Paige seemed like an odd fit. However, after a lot of poking and prodding, Jasper decided that Paige was perfect. She even went a step further adding occasional keyboard melodies. She brings an indie rock perspective with influences like The Strokes and The Libertines, but still amps it up with a slash of Joan Jett and Tsunami Bomb.
Sarah- The newest member of team Jasper. When Ian left the band in 2008, Jasper was rescued by, literally, the girl-next-door. It started out as a quick fix since she had played with mostly metal and rock n' roll bands (Divided Road), but with her 10 years of experience, Sarah hit the ground running. She helps to solidify the line up with a loud, full rhythm. Her influences range from Dave Mathews Band to Evanescence to No Doubt with a pinch of 311.
WHAT THE HELL IS A JASPER? WHY IS IT SO COLOSSAL?
Jasper the Colossal came after a long list of names. We toyed with names like The Fakeouts, 52 Fakeout, Stumbling Motion, Tight Rope Walkers, Post Bear, and various others. Finally (after much begging and pleading from Paige) we settled on Jasper the Colossal. Eventually we decided that Jasper is a brontosaurus, and they're pretty big. Thus, Jasper the Colossal.
