My name is Allie and I love everything about this world! This is not a personal site, this site is solely to educate others about the problems we face. I post daily (usually) about things like: global warming, animal rights, child/elder abuse, overpopulation, Darfur, Burma, Tibet, Iraq, AIDS, poverty, etc. Help me out by helping the Earth. Be kind to others, teach someone about something you love, be kind the the animals, plants, and land, and love yourself! Spread the word and together we can make this a better place with just a little effort! Thanks:)
The Facts:
It take 17 trees to produce 1 ton of paper bags and 11 barrels of crude oil to produce 1 ton of plastic bags.
14 million trees were cut down in 1999 in order to supply just the U.S. with paper bags.
32,900 calories of fossil energy are required to raise one 12-ounce steak.
25 billion Styrofoam cups are thrown away by Americans annually.
1.2 billion people do not have access to clean water.
Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit around the world since 1880.
Coral reefs, which are highly sensitive to small changes in water temperature, suffered the worst bleaching—or die-off in response to stress—ever recorded in 1998, with some areas seeing bleach rates of 70 percent. Experts expect these sorts of events to increase in frequency and intensity in the next 50 years as sea temperatures rise.
Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier. Polar bears and indigenous cultures are already suffering from the sea-ice loss.
Though natural amounts of CO2 have varied from 180 to 300 parts per million (ppm), today's CO2 levels are around 380 ppm.
Between 1961 and 1997, the world’s glaciers lost 890 cubic miles of ice.
America is the world leader as top global warming polluter in the world.
The average house in the U.S. creates about 22,000 pounds of CO2 in one year.
Using a dryer to dry your clothes uses 1,400 pounds of CO2 in a year, try air drying them!
What can I do?
Switch to reusable bags and save 1,000 plastic bags.
Try tofu! One pound of meat requires eight time as much energy to produce as one pound of veggie protein, like tofu.
Plant something!
Lower your thermostat by 2 degrees in the winter and you can save 4% on your energy bill.
Look for appliances with the Energy Star logo.
Change your old incandescent light bulbs to a CFL bulb. If everyone in America did that with just one bulb, then that would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the annual emissions of about 800,000 cars.
