The music of The Phoenix Prestige has been described as combining the visceral energy of Punk rock with the ethereal minimalism of contemporary composers such as Philip Glass and Bernard Herman.The band's sound is layered with a ghostly tension thats shaped by minimal string arrangements reminiscent of movie sound tracks such as Philip Glass's score for Tod Browning's 1931 adaption of 'Dracula'. The Phoenix Prestige's music inspires a bucolic feeling of seclusion, like clear glass sheets of Antarctic ice, only to be shattered by the sound of trashing guitars and pounding drums.
Redemption obession and devotion are major themes found on the band's first EP 'The Bullet Catch'. Deathdefyers, the opening track on the EP was initially inspired by the epic 1982 movie 'Fitzcarraldo' directed by Werner Herzog . Later as the song developed, the true life story of Chung Ling Soo, a mysterous deathdefying artist and magicain,became it's muse. The myth of Chung Ling Soo continues to have a major effect on the band lyrically and visually.
Other songs such as 'The Bullet Catch' and Antarctica, demonstrate the bands' ability to experiment and fearlessly abandon traditional song structures. Antarctica slowly builds from a stark pensive hymn to a beat driven hypnotic loop, echoing the style of current electronic innovators such as The Neptunes and DJ Shadow.
