Paula von J. was born in Le Chesnay, near Versailles, the city of French kings and queens.
Despite her deep regrets that she was not born an ordinary woman, she seems somehow destined to have been born a queen, and to die a queen.
She described her own childhood as wonderful, as she was the most creative child of the family.
While in high school she developed an interest in art, especially photography.
She attended the Academy of fine arts and graduated successfully from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon – La Sorbonne.
During this time she met and married her husband, a gifted musician. They divorced 3 years later.
After the end of their relationship, Paula von J. experienced numerous financial and psychological difficulties. She destroyed most of her work and suffered from depression and a persecution complex. She soon became caught up in her own feelings of loneliness and unhappiness and her longings for true love.
After a few months doctors discovered she was mentally disabled, suffering from mental disorders (depression, substance abuse, anxiety).
She had always tried in the past to find someone to make her decisions for her. She couldn’t imagine that she would be the one to control her own life.
Finally, taking her newfound convictions and infusing them with courage, she abandoned safety and comfort by choosing to fight for the very right to fight for herself, to make her own decisions, to discover the truth for herself.
In 1923 Paula von J., who was working as a picture researcher, ran away from home and moved to Berlin.
Almost immediately she tried to leave Germany for France, which was not an easy thing to accomplish at the time. She became a more or less permanent inmate of the famous insane asylum 8mm. "I want to get out of here immediately," she said when she arrived there. "I think it's an outrage I have been brought here. I resent being detained and wasting my time."
Paula von J. still lives and works in Berlin.
