Formed in August 2007, John Smith Quintet currently consists of vocalist Clare Assetta , bass player Chris Frangou, lead guitarist Andrew Frangou, and drummer Ian Grant-Rowan who replaced Phill Rogers after his departure.
Their aim is to create new and interesting music that can change the world under their own genre 'Grunk' which combines the musical elements of Grunge, Funk and anything else that might fall into the mix.
John Smith Quintet are known for their unique and memorable live shows, ground breaking songs and their infamous charity concerts for Beyond Blue and the Red Cross.
"...John Smith Quintet includes an invisible member as there are only four members in the band. Questions of sanity aside, this band doesn’t like to try and explain their music. 'We like to do our own thing,' says Chris Frangou, bass player of JSQ, 'I call it “grunkâ€...'"
- Buzz Magazine "...Look out for more of these guys. Their material is polished and shiny but textured and funky. They included an acoustic song, a couple of covers, some instrumental tracks, a ballad, something resembling 70's prog rock and even a bit of reggae. Definitely the stand out of the night."
- Sam Booker (music critic)"...went to see John Smith Quintet perform with their new singer, Clare Assetta. First show in and this lady has some serious talent.... all the old songs with Scott have all but disappeared and Clare has breathed new life and a great deal of energy into JSQ, she dances, she moves she looks brilliant on stage and I hope they go on to do great things together for a long time to come, its an excellent mix with Clare's lyrics and vocal stylings and Chris's powerful and grunky basslines, and Phill and Andrew add further texture through their percussion and leading riffs. Nice work, very nice work."
