MY HAPPY GUN

About Me

- -

My Happy Gun is a New York City band made up of members of other bands– Foxglove, Down ’N Outs, The Cramps, Rockethouse and Oscura, to name only a few. They sound like they’re from some other place, a place where Link Wray, Nick Cave, and X all hang out and swap tales of adventure. This makes sense in a city where so many people come from somewhere else. Garage, surf, spaghetti-western, and all manner of rock ’n’ roll are rolled into a tasteful mix.
My Happy Gun rocks with style. They remember the music that gave birth to what would eventually become “alternative music” and use the best parts to create a very modern, if often dark, cinematically musical landscape.

REVIEWS:
"The sound of this band takes you straight back to the gutters of 1970's Bowery...think Television, Iggy & The Stooges, MC5 and the darker side of the Velvet Underground, and you're halfway there! There's a heavy leaning to a 1960's garage band sound with the echo/tremelo guitars giving a very eerie feel. The songs are all well written and individual in their delivery, with a great blend of quiet-loud-quiet moments, you can tell they know what they're doing when they write. I especially love the bass-driven 'Cold Star', which is the stand out track on the album. If you're a fan of the darker side of life, then this band will blow you clean away!"(Chris Rockson - soundcheck-magazine.net)
Sex, Death, and the Devil
"After The Strokes fell off the Earth, and Indy bandits- Vampire Weekend monopolized all current music blogs, there hasn’t been a good old- fashioned rock band to go see. The music industry is either on its last gasp, or the desire for cum-stained dirt-rock has been forgotten. Few musicians remember what it’s like to “rock out with your cock out” in dark, smoke-filled nightclubs till the wee wee hours..
After the chaos-inflicting Oscura broke up in the late 90’s, singer/songwriter- Andrea Sicco set out to explore and refine the stark, twisted ideas he had developed and begun to test out about 1960’s British garage rock, Neil Young grunge riffs, and mod-era delta blues. Assembling top notch rhythm section- Robert Goldsmith (bass) and Jungle Jim (Drums) as My Happy Gun, Sicco slowed the old band’s spirited evil to a crawl and began to experiment more poetic-like lyrical conceits. He is forever obsessed with his typical themes of sex, death, and the devil, but here he relocates the ambiguous energy that had gone out from much of his 90’s material.
“Make it come” is my favorite track on their self-titled debut EP. The song’s based around a lead guitar riff somewhere between the Yardbirds and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Sicco’s vocals are darker, more out-of-focus than his previous work, sounding like Scott Walker dressed up as Morrissey on Halloween through distortion pedals. It captures Sicco at his most raw and primeval.
“King of the Highway” is the band’s attempt to integrate Sicco’s new found, well-groomed vocal charm. (a grim Elvis Presley impersonation, if you will) It’s a gothic waltz in the manner of Bauhaus, or Echo and the Bunnymen crooning the blues.
My Happy Gun could be part of the rock and roll death rattle, but they will hold the flag as it's burned to the ground by this new wave of bullshit-post-indy crap. (fuck off Vampire Weekend!) For the unemployed and all night party goers, check out this band, preferably at midnight, after massive whiskey consumption. You’ll be surprised to know how good it feels to take those hands out of your pockets, and ROCK OUT again." (Lee Diamond - theaccidentalgeniusblog.com)
"The only thing better than a New York based band is a band consisting of members from other New York based bands. My Happy Gun represents the fusion of sounds and stylistic components from various subgenres of rock music. If you’re looking for something to satisfy your Indie craving, this band does not disappoint. Based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn this band blends in, yet stands out from other bands in this neck of the woods. Although they may seem like the missing component for your “trendy” weekend lineup, these guys are distinctly different. You grasp a real sense of passion and feelings in their songs. On top of that you can notice the influence of British alternative rock in lead singer Andrea Sicco’s voice (which is always a good thing). Out of all the songs on their Myspace page I’d have to say “Abbatoir Hotel” is their stand out song. Andrea Sicco’s voice blends well with the great bass lines and drum work on this dark feeling ballad. In conclusion, if you want to vibe to the abstract sounds New York has to offer My Happy Gun is your band."(Carlos J. Morales - neighborbeeblog.com blog)
"My Happy Gun plays moody, dark rock that you can shake your butt to. There’s a definite British 80’s Alternative influence (think Echo & the Bunnymen) but you can also hear some 60’s echo guitar (think Link Wray) and 90’s rock (think Swervedriver). They do not sound like the scores of Williamsburg bands that put art school conceits ahead of their music. My Happy Gun also chooses their clothing with no sense of irony, and you are encouraged to do the same when you come to their shows." (sohojournal.com)
"Andrea Sicco from My Happy Gun recently sent me a copy of his band’s self-titled EP. It didn’t rub me the right way after first listen, but I felt obligated to sharing it. I know somebody out there is going to connect with this. The wonderful thing about contributing to a website of this nature is knowing it takes diff’rent strokes to move the world, yes it does. With that said… (bio follows) It made complete sense to me, so why rewrite it? Listen for yourself…" (www.rocksellout.com)
"When I start listening to the first song of the cd, 'Johny & Suzi', I was really thrilled... the guitar and vocal tone were different to me, kind of outstanding. They seemed to maintain their promises of "the sound from some other place"... But than I listened to the following songs and really was kind of disappointed. There was nothing new, nothing really interesting during the next four songs. My Happy Gun really tried to create a new sound, something different, and I absolutely appreciate this.. but the songs just didn't kill me..." (Maria Ostermann - playlouder.com) (sorry Maria, we will try to kill you next time, hahahaha! xoxoxoxo-mhg)
"Definitely music with balls, or better... three dicks" (G. Casagrande - musica-con-le-pallequadrate.blogspot)
