Plymouth quartet, Crazy Arm, is the versatile, roots-punk lovechild that arose from two popular city bands, NoComply and The Once Over Twice. Although forming in May 2005, it wasn't until their respective bands split up a year later that they became a more serious concern.
Pitched between the dark twang of 16 Horsepower, the punk thrust of Fugazi and Hot Water Music, the crunchy pop of Ted Leo and the protest songs of Dick Gaughan, the band have developed a distinctly progressive and aggressive style, shot through with a healthy dose of grass-roots politics. They rely chiefly on folk/country open tunings and slide guitars to evoke moods that are at odds with the punk orthodoxy.
They have completed five UK tours and many one-off shows, playing and striking up friendships with the likes of Sonic Boom Six, Failsafe, Howards Alias, Capdown, The Cut Ups, OK Pilot, Random Hand, Intro5pect, Chillerton, Lucero and The Casting Out.
The self-produced demo EP, 'Cross Country', is no longer available so feel free to burn it off someone else.
The band are all vegetarian/vegan, internationalist and atheist; identify with human and animal rights struggles; and support the efforts of grass-roots activists worldwide.
'Cross Country' demo EP reviews:
"Here we have a new band that sounds like a grizzled, road-hardy bunch of musicians singing for their supper, such is the inherent power and dirty glory of their songwriting. They should be standing on some huge stages sooner rather than later." Ben Patashnik / punktastic.com
"Powerful, progressive, political and inspirational. An immense, energy-fuelled, life-affirming statement of intent yet fragile, honest and heartfelt at the same time." The Fly
"Crazy Arm bring hooks and edgy guitars aplenty on 'Cross Country'… I dripped drool all over the keyboard just thinking about a proper full-length." Blake Solomon / absolutepunk.net
"The live energy they muster is immense. Straddling the margins between a punky militancy and folk fragility, they can spit out a tight, snarling, ballsy anthem and break your heart at the same time. Indeed, out of the strong came forth sweetness." Amy McGill / 247
