Mastering helps bridge the distance between the artist and the listener.Moreover, mastering makes music compatible and competitive for the consumer market, so that each title sounds right on any kind of stereo system.The actual process of mastering can vary from project to project depending on the original sound content and the final results desired. It usually involves for the most part, overall EQ, compression, limiting, loudness, enhancing, and sometimes some editing on the final stereo tracks.

In the mixdown you bring the individual audio tracks into the right relationship and, where applicable, add effects (delay, chorus, distortion, etc.). Everything that alters the total sound of the mix, is part of the mastering process (e.g. compression, dithering).Things to remember when mixing* Do not compress the mix.
* Do not normalize the mix.
* Try not to limit the mix.
* Make sure there is no clipping - have your mix peak at around -2 dB .
* If possible, don't do fade-ins and fade-outs during mixing. This can be done smoothly and easily in the mastering stage.
