About Me

Album Preview:"What does it take to make music in 2008 anyway? Too much extra time, delusions of grandeur, a MySpace page? Maybe the first thing is an experience that needs to be sung.Alanna Lin a.k.a. Fascinoma began her musical career at the piano like many Asian children born in the US in the mid-seventies. The eldest daughter of two Taiwanese immigrants, she, in standard form, studied classical piano and violin and performed competitively as a teenager in various festivals throughout Cleveland, Ohio. Classical music at once affirmed her Asian minority status and gave her the freedom to excel. From Top-40 radio and early incarnations of MTV, she studied the non-classical forms of Madonna, The Bangles, and Whitney Houston as well as the soulful expressions of both George Michael and Michael Jackson, fascinated by the sexuality and theatricality of pop music and the borrowing of culture at play within it.The posture of the outsider has always been a part of rock and roll. But in Alanna Lin's music this position reflects an experience that has been distilled into a figure that is both soulful and seductive. On a foundation of simple pop/rock progressions, she handles a range of emotion and perspective with originality and humor --in the mixture of earnestness and hilarity in "I'm Walking This Road Because You Stole My Car (Don't Go)" and in more somber ruminations on a lover's flaws in "Who's Gonna Love You" ("Baby, you think you're so wise/But baby, I've seen you compromise . . .") The production on the album is sparse, intent on drawing listeners in, but her voice will satisfy both fans of Cat Power and PJ Harvey-- her creative take on Paula Abdul's 1988 Hit, Straight Up is an unexpected journey from sweetness to fury and back again.Produced by John Paterno (Los Lobos, Suzanne Vega, Richard Thompson), with co-production, mixing and editing by Raffaello Mazza (Arlo Guthrie, posthumous Jimi Hendrix), Mike Corwin (Correatown, Red Maids) on guitar, Barbara Gruska (Jenny Lewis, Inara George, Benji Hughes) on drums, Bram Inscore (Beck, Peeping Tom, Jem) on bass and keys, this debut album is made of 'music for road trips and memories. (Ana Crowe)'" -- C.C. US Release Date: November 2, 2008
