Fate has always been good to me, leading me to the right place at the right time. I was born in the spring of 1967 in Seattle. As the adopted child of an Alabama farm boy turned sailor and a 3rd generation pioneer cowgirl from Jackson Hole Wyoming, my country and western musical education began the day they brought me home. As soon as I could speak, I was singing along with the legends of American country music courtesy of my Daddy’s record collection. We traveled from coast to coast with the U.S. Navy, spending the early 1970’s in Memphis, which provided me the opportunity to visit the Grand Old Opry regularly and witness greatness in action. It was then that I began planning my own musical career at the age of five, which led me to Austin in the late 1980’s.
James White at the Broken Spoke in Austin gave me my first real break in the music business, booking my band on a monthly basis and introducing me to a wide variety of true Texas artists. Since then it has been my privilege to travel the great state of Texas with some of the best musicians I can imagine, The Chainsmokin’ Poorboys, featuring Mr. Jesse “Guitar†Taylor, Wes “Tex†Mings and Keith Carnes. Together we played the Texas Independence Day Parade, the cast and crew party on the set of “The Alamoâ€, and were featured on the KLRU special, “The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock†alongside Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Benson and Jimmy Lafave, to name a few.
I met Jesse Taylor on New Years Eve, 2002, at a club called La Kiva in Terlingua, on the Texas/Mexico border. I was booked as an acoustic opening act for the Texas Belairs out of Lubbock and Jesse was playing lead that night. As I left the stage, Jesse came up to me and said, “Boy, that was good. I sure would like to play with you sometime!†At the time I was re-organizing my band and for Jesse “Guitar “Taylor to want to play with me was like Heaven opening up and the Angels rejoicing! I had always been in awe of his legendary guitar work with the Joe Ely band and Billy Joe Shaver. It was then that Jesse took me under his wing, and we played together for two years. I was blessed to record an album with him called “Bright As the Sunâ€. It was some of the last work he did. Unfortunately, Jesse passed away in March 2006, but his legend and spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of all who love him. He truly was Bright as the Sun, and he changed the course of my life forever.
I am thankful for the many opportunities I have had in my life to be a part of the beautiful tradition of American roots music.
