Outside of a music community in which all change is the same and differences among artists are miniscule, lies an emcee that dares to be neither identical nor seasonal but influential. Colossus a.k.a. LAH possesses all the characteristics of a rapper from his tattooed and muscular physique to his “I know I’m hot†swagger and stylish wardrobe; however, with just a listen to his music his uniqueness becomes apparent. The 24-year old Louisiana native finds himself at the forefront of a new movement, dishing out a new ideology that goes against thriving misconceptions glorified by his peers. LAH hones his skills as an artist by constantly pushing the envelope creatively while others around him stick to traditional formats and subject matter. His vast arrays of compositions offer listeners a colorful selection ranging from R&B/ Hardcore to Hip Hop/ Rock fusions to choose from instead of monotonous tempos and effortless hooks. It’s not just the vibrant ensembles LAH fashions so differently that makes him stick out like a sore thumb amidst others, it’s also his devotion to the quality of songs as opposed to the quantity of songs. He continually has to prove himself as an emcee with the many barriers local residents place on acquiring radio time and respect being that his rap sheets are full of lyrics rather than criminal charges. True enough, LAH did not come from some low-income family or some poverty-stricken neighborhood, but does that make him less of a potential hip-hop heavyweight? At times it seems like gaining acceptance is impossible with these stereotypical molds prevalent, on the other hand stereotypes are meant to be broken and his willingness to be that change enables him to climb artistically to heights unexplored. Emotionally connecting with his audiences through life lessons and experiences shared explicitly over an assortment of beats powered distinctly by his raspy voice, LAH believes that his duty as an artist is to speak up for those who can’t speak up for themselves. If you really want to hear what the King of the South should sound like all you have to do is check out the original, fierce, powerful in addition to the poetic rhymes of Baton Rouge phenomenon LAH.
