The Ruby Kid

RIP JIMMY SIRRELL, 1922-2008

About Me

The Ruby Kid is 21.//The Ruby Kid is so named because his real family name is Rubinstein (it was changed in the mid-1930s to make it less conspicuously ethnic) and because red is the traditional colour of working-class politics.//The Ruby Kid is proud of his Jewish culture and heritage but does not believe in god and thinks religion is poison.//The Ruby Kid is a revolutionary socialist and a member of the Alliance for Workers' Liberty.//The Ruby Kid was born in Nottingham but is an American citizen. His family emigrated there from Poland and worked in the garment industry on New York's East Side. He will not be voting for McCain or Obama.//The Ruby Kid first started listening to hip-hop around 2001 or so, but it all was rubbish. He started listening to good hip-hop about a year later when he bought Aesop Rock's 'Labor Days'. He has not looked back since.//The Ruby Kid is not, however, an indie-rap snob and is just as happy listening to 'Illmatic' as he is listening to 'Fantastic Damage'.//The Ruby Kid believes that hip-hoppers who can't find value in other genres of music are dogmatists and thinks that folk music, ska and punk share a lot with hip-hop in terms of spirit.//The Ruby Kid plays the bodhrán in his spare time.//The Ruby Kid has been writing for as long as he's had the capacity to, and has been recording/performing since October 2007.//The Ruby Kid owes a debt of thanks to Nem, who "discovered" him when he was working behind a bar in Sheffield.//The Ruby Kid also owes a big debt of thanks to the cats who make his live shows worthwhile, which first and foremost must include Max Munday (demi-god of the double-bass).//The Ruby Kid would rather to listen to Bob Dylan than most mainstream rappers spitting.//The Ruby Kid will never "blow up", "break through", "go big time" and will probably never get signed.//The Ruby Kid raps for the same reason Percy Shelley wrote poetry.//The Ruby Kid can drop pretentious literary references with the best of them.//The Ruby Kid is probably a backpacker, an exponent of alt.hip-hop and a die-hard indie-rap head, but kinda resents all those labels.//The Ruby Kid is probably the only Anglo-American Jewish Bolshevik rapper you will ever hear in your entire life.

INDEPENDENT AS FUCK: THE RUBY KID FEATURED ON THE INDIE HOUR

To dedicated hip-hop heads in America, the term "indie rap" means something. It means guys like this, groups like this and labels like this. It's not about a sound (hell, even Dizzee's signed to Def J...

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT...

So, Wiley finally played Sheffield. And a good thing too; I've never seen 800 12-15 year old kids riot before but I'm pretty certain that if Eski Boy had bailed on the gig for a second time, that's pr...

"CUT-GLASS ACCENT"? ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING ME?

Residents of Sheffield and glorious South Yorkshire more generally may be familiar with Exposed, a free but surprisingly glossy monthly lifestyle/culture/that sort of thing magazine. If you flick to p...

"A THOUGHTFUL AND INTELLIGENT RAPPER"

I stumbled across this little gem whilst doing a spot of ego-surfing. It appears to be a review written by an amateur music journo who came to my last gig in London. Sure, "Freeola Chat" isn...

VIDEO BONANZA

As I've said many times before, the frontline of hip-hop music is not MySpace or the recorded track; it's the live performance. So it's my distinct pleasure to bring you three examples of what's about...

THE RUBY KID: LIVE FROM K-5

Even though I've only been active as a performer for less than a year, I've played a fair few gigs. I've played to crowds of a handful and crowds of hundreds. I've played in the basemen...

FOLKIN’ AROUND...

The number of hip-hoppers who attend the Cambridge Folk Festival is probably pretty small. The number who'll admit to it is probably even smaller. But I do both. I was into folk music way before I was...
