Smiles' music has always been well-focused, and they soon began writing for their first album, Kid Stuff, to be released in April of 2009. Upon the arrival of bassist Rhapentye, the Smiles sound was filled out, and the trio concentrated on developing the colors that define their music. With a love of all musical styles and acts from Motown to Nirvana they create a sound often compared to, by their fans and onlookers, to the likes of Television and The Beach Boys.
Throughout the completion of the album's material, Smiles performed acoustically in coffee shops and bars in Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, and often posted up on Venice's boardwalk, to showcase their vocal talents, with all members singing. From these minimalist performances, Smiles harnessed their vocal abilities and decided they were ready to use them in an electric live setting. It was then that lead singer/drummer Dye Vin modified his kit to stand up while playing. And alongside the grinding guitar of Sau Skins and pumping bass guitar of Rhapentye, this unique set-up creates an exceptionally powerful and mesmerizing atmosphere on stage that most have told the group they have never experienced before.
After a few months of laying out the foundation for the group, tryouts for a fourth member we're held. But with a group consisting of two brothers and a life long friend, it was hard to find someone who could weave a niche in such a tightly knit group. Finally in late July, after countless tryouts for a lead guitarist, Bahbee was discovered, and the group's sound was complete. Now a quartet, the group has become notorious throughout the South Bay for dynamic, explosive live sets, seamlessly performing songs of completely polar musical spectrums in chameleon like fashion.
And now, with over two albums worth of solid hit material, Smiles is a band who aims to please... everyone. Eager to finally present themselves to a worldwide audience, with their heads pointed to the sky and their toes planted on the ground, they are, Smiles.
