Sidney Crosby continued to rewrite the NHL record books in his second season.
At age 19 years, eight months, Crosby became the youngest player in NHL history to win the Art Ross Trophy as the scoring champion with 120 points (36+84) in 79 games. And, Crosby is the youngest scoring champion in any major professional sport. He is the only teenager to win the Art Ross Trophy in league history. The next-youngest was Wayne Gretzky, who won the title at 20 years and 3 months of age at the conclusion of the 1980-81 season.
It marks the 12th time in the past 19 season that a Penguins player has won the Art Ross Trophy. Mario Lemieux won the title six times while Jaromir Jagr claimed it on five occasions.
In addition, Crosby is the second-youngest player to win the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and youngest to claim the Lester B. Pearson Award as the “most outstanding player” during the regular season as voted by members of the NHLPA.
Crosby received 91 of 143 first-place votes for 1,225 points in Hart Trophy voting by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, who tallied 25 first-place votes and 801 points, was runner-up.
At 19 years, 10 months, Crosby is the second-youngest Hart Trophy winner in the history of the award, which was introduced in 1924. Wayne Gretzky was 19 years, 5 months old in 1979-80 when he captured the first of eight consecutive Hart Trophies with the Edmonton Oilers.
Crosby surpassed a 21-year-old Gretzky in 1981-82 as the youngest Pearson winner. Crosby also represents the Penguins’ third Pearson recipient (Lemieux, Jagr), which ties them with the New York Rangers (Ratelle, Messier, Jagr) as the only two clubs to have three players win the Pearson in their respective jerseys.
Crosby joins Evgeni Malkin to give the Penguins the overall points leader and rookie points leader. The last NHL team to finish a season with both was the 1959-60 Blackhawks. Bobby Hull won the Art Ross Trophy and Bill Hay led all rookies in points.
Crosby took over the NHL scoring lead on Dec. 13 with a six-point game against Philadelphia. He became the first teenager to lead the NHL in scoring since Gretzky led briefly near the end of the 1979-80 season and early in the 1980-81 campaign.
He followed it up with four points Dec. 15 against the New York Islanders to become only the third teenager in NHL history to record 10-or-more points over a span of two team games. Gretzky did it in February 1980 and Los Angeles’ Jimmy Carson in March 1988. Both Gretzky and Carson had 10 points in two games.
Crosby collected his 100th point when he scored the game-tying goal in the March 10th 3-2 overtime win against the New York Rangers. He became just the third player in NHL history to score 100 points in his second season after scoring 100 or more in his rookie season (Mario Lemieux, Peter Stastny). He is the fifth Pittsburgh player to deliver back-to-back 100-point seasons. The others were Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Kevin Stevens and Jagr.
Crosby recorded 132 points (49+83) through his first 100 games. It is the second highest total for any active NHL player. Teemu Selanne had 152 points in his first 100 games. His two-season total of 220 points is the fifth-highest total in NHL history for a player in his first two seasons behind Gretzky (301), Peter Stastny (248), Lemieux (241) and Kent Nilsson (224).
His 48 power play assists this season tied for the fifth-highest season total in Penguins history. His 61 power-play points are the sixth-highest season total on the Penguins’ all-time list.
Crosby earned an NHL-best 825,783 votes in the All-Star fan balloting. At 19 years, five months, Crosby was the youngest player voted to start the All-Star Game since fan balloting began in 1986. The youngest starter previously was the Penguins’ Jagr, elected to the Prince of Wales Conference lineup for the 1992 All-Star Game in Philadelphia (19 years, 11 months).
And, Crosby earned the most fan votes by far this season. San Jose’s Joe Thornton was second in voting with 663,931 votes – 161,852 less than Crosby.
In his Stanley Cup playoffs debut, Crosby became the fourth teenager in NHL history to score a goal in each of the first three postseason games of his career. The others were Wendel Clark (four games, 1986 Maple Leafs), Paul Coffey (three games, 1981 Oilers) and Glen Wesley (three games, 1988 Bruins).
Crosby was selected as Sporting News NHL Player of the Year and to the publication’s NHL all-star team. In addition, The Hockey News selected Crosby for its two most prestigious individual awards – as the NHL’s Best Player and MVP.
Sidney Crosby received the Dapper Dan Sportsman of the Year award in 2007, becoming the youngest recipient in the 71-year history of the prestigious charity event.
Also, Crosby has been named the top sports figure in a Time.com survey on the most influential people of the year. Crosby finished in a seven-way tie for second place overall with 85,835 votes, the eighth-highest total in the survey.
On May 31, 2007, Crosby was named Penguins captain. At 19 years, nine months (297 days), he is the youngest team captain in NHL history. Previously, the youngest captain in NHL history was Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lecavalier, who was named captain in March, 2000, at age 19 years, 10 months (324 days).
2005-06: Super rookie sensation Sidney Crosby changed the NHL record books forever in 2005-06. The 18-year-old delivered one of the best rookie seasons in league history. He became the NHL’s youngest player to reach the 100-point mark at the age of 18 years, 253 days as he finished his season with 102 points (39+63) in 81 games. Also, he surpassed Mario Lemieux’s Penguins rookie record of 100 points, which No. 66 set in 1984-85.
Crosby finished his rookie season in scintillating fashion. He racked up 37 points in 23 games once play resumed on March 1 following the Olympic break. He fought through a nagging injury in his final five games, but still managed to rack up 11 points (3+8) to complete his record-setting surge over the 100-point mark.
The NHL’s previous standard for 100 points by an 18-year-old was set by Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk, who scored his 100th point at the age of 18 years, 354 days. Crosby beat him by a significant margin – 101 days.
In addition, Crosby tied Joe Juneau for fifth place in NHL rookie scoring. Juneau had 102 points (32+70) in 84 games in the 1992-93 season.
Crosby led all rookies in assists and finished second in rookie scoring to Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin. The 20-year-old winger had four more points than Crosby.
Along the way, Crosby captivated fans around the world. His impact was felt especially in Pittsburgh as the Penguins led the NHL in increased attendance for 2005-06.
Crosby, who led the Penguins in points, goals, assists, power-play goals, game-winning goals and shots, continued his magic at the 2006 World Championships in Latvia. He became the youngest player to win a scoring title at the tournament and was named the top forward with 16 points (8+8) in nine games for Canada.

On Oct. 21 vs. Columbus, Staal (18 years, 41 days) became the youngest NHL player to score two or more goals in one game since Dec. 21, 1943 when Bep Guidolin (18 years, 12 days) scored twice for Boston in an 8-5 win over Toronto.

The last team to have three players score 20+ goals in the same season before their 21st birthday was Edmonton in 1981-82 (Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey).
Gretzky and Messier both turned 21 years old in January that season but they each reached the 20-goal mark before their 21st birthday. Coffey did not turn 21 until after the season ended.
Staal is the third-youngest player to reach the 20-goal plateau in one season, trailing Ted Kennedy and Crosby.
