Read about my meeting Cyndi Lauper!
I have been a die-hard Cyndi fanatic my whole life! The first song I sang as a toddler was True Colors, and I sang it a lot. I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert with my Mom when I was 16. She opened for Cher and played in San Antonio, TX. I had already loved her my whole life. My mom and I had a really great time!
7-25-02 San Francisco, California. club universe
I was homeless in S.F., CA. & saw a poster on a pole on Haight st. for my lifetime idol CYNDI LAUPER!!!! My lifetime goal has been to meet her, talk to her, and give her a hug, I have dreamt of this my whole life! So when the 25th was upon me, I was there at the club at 6:00am with a huge cardboard sign that said "HELP ME MEET MY IDOL, CYNDI LAUPER...I JUST WANNA HAVE FUN" it had a poster, flyer, and newspaper clippings taped to it. I was wearing 8 Cyndi buttons and my Cyndi shirt with all my chainmaile jewelry that I make, including my headdress, so there I was in all my strange unusualness. Many limos drove by all day but at 6:00pm one stopped, the licence plate said "DYNAMIC" Cyndi got out to go inside and I loudly said "Cyndi, wait please, I adore you! please, I'm not old enough to get in" (I was only 19 & it was a 21 and up show). Then to my suprise she walked over to me! We ended up talking for about 30-45 minutes, I got to tell her about her insperation on my life and she was so concerned about my living on the street that she hugged me 4 times and asked me about my Mom. She is the most caring person I have ever met. I had my picture taken with her & she signed all my stuff; cardboard, records, etc. Then she asked about my jewelry, I told her about the jewelry that I make and she wanted one of my headdresses!
When the show started late everyone was excited, she arranged for me to stand around back of the club so that I could see part of the stage from behind. About halfway through the show she hushed the crowd and said "EVERYBODY SHHHH, THIS IS IMPORTANT! THIS NEXT SONG IT DEDICATE TO THE GIRL ON THE OUTSIDE WHO COULDN’T GET IN." then she started the first song I ever sang, TRUE COLORS. This was the best night of my life!!!!
12-9-02 San Francisco, California. tower records, signing CD release party
I met Cyndi before on may 25th at club universe so I had a pic of us for her to sign... the show at Tower was awesome, it was small and very personal. When she was singing ITS HARD TO BE ME she thanked all of us "down there" so I screamed, at that point she stopped the song and everyone else screamed too, she was thinking 'she bop moment' It was a fun show.
At the meet and greet signing I gave her a Chainmaile HeadDress & pair of HandFlowers, she autographed the pic of us and asked me if I was still homeless, she cares so much about her fans! I love her.
4-26-04 Austin, Texas. la zona rosa
Wow... this is my fourth time seeing Cyndi and I am continually moved by her voice and performance... She opened with At Last and closed with a Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, sing-along style. She played the hits we all love and told some great stories about her life. Twice she came down and stood on the chair behind me with a fan helping her stand up. She saw me and gave me a hug, I don’t have any idea if she remembered me from San Francisco. This show was great, every Cyndi show is great !!! I got another hug from Cyndi, I met lots of cool people in the Austin area, and I got a shirt, poster, and button... What an awesome Monday night! Here is a pic of my outfit for the show:
9-30-06 Austin, Texas. The Paramount
I was so excited when I got tickets to see Cyndi The Body Acustic Tour at the Paramount! We sat Center Floor seats P-1&2 Kimmy went with me. Here is a picture of the Paramount:
I was so happy we were able to make it early, we went around back into the alleyway and waited to see her, even though I missed her going in and out of sound check we DID catch her going in for the show!!! Kimmy and I were the only people dressed 80s, everyone kept telling us how much they loved our outfits. Hers some pictures we took in the alley:
...and I had to get a picture in front of the tourbus:
I saw her following Steve Gaboury into the back and said loudly while jogging toward her "Cyndi please wait, Im the homeless girl from San Francisco, remember me?" then she saw me and turned and came toward me, I quickly told her I just wanted her to see me now and know that our talk really helped me turn my life around, and to give her a letter I had written. She said "You look better!" gave me a hug, took the letter, and I said "Thank you, I am better" she opened the letter and the pictures and card fell out, I helped her pick them up, she then saw the picture of me and my little boy Kadence and said "awww" We chatted for a minute and I asked to get another picture with her, she agreed and then took a picture with Kimmy also!
She made it a point to look me in the eyes before I left to tell me how important my child is and to never give up on him.
The show was awesome, Cyndi always sings like an angel. Jill Sobule opened, Cyndi played her dulcimer and sang back grounds on Jill’s “Love in the Bushes†and Steve played piano for “Spanish Wrestlerâ€. Jill named Cyndi and Steve her band “The Sugar Titsâ€. Jill is really funny, I like her and her music, she even invited ‘anyone that knows the words’ up on stage for the song Supermodel, only one girl went up, it was amusing. This tour was a very nice, it was an acoustic jam. Cyndi always tells cute stories and talks about her mom. She was wearing a really cool black top and black pants, she looked great as always! I heard some new songs and lovely renditions of old favorites.
We were SO excited, and Im so very happy to feel like I have closure, she knows Im happier now and better thanks to her inspiration and strength.
I got three more tour shirts and a teddy bear for my boy. I got an autograph and hug from the fittle player. I managed to bootleg quite a bit of footage with my sisters camera and take some cute pictures.
01-06-07 Austin, TX. Atomic Tattoo
I got the She Bop Moon!
It turned out really well, I LOVE IT! Thanks Evan!
06-24-07 Houston, TX. True Colors Tour at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
We rented a hotel online. After searching for special passes online and via phone, Kimmy and I bought our tickets with the presale code from HRC, hoping for killer seats, but the seats we got were Right-T-22&23.
We got a bit lost on the way in, but found the hotel in time to swim in the pool and shower with too much hot water, etc. it was really fun. We then called a Taxi to take us to the show.
When we first arrived the local 80's radio station, 1069thepoint, was taking pictures and giving out paper fans, so they took our picture. As we hung out in line we realized we were, again, the only ones dresses up! We went in and to the merchandise table, for a first round. I got a True Colors Tour tee, teddy bear, flashing tiara, glowstick, and rainbow boa but it shed too much to wear haha.
Then we were off to our seats. We thought the seats wouldn’t be so great given being so far right, but they were just fine, we had good view of the stage and the nearby screen. Just after Dresden Dolls were done they were doing a meet and greet, so we decided to head back out to meet them, but first a stop to the ladies room, then for more 'rita to drink. As we were waiting around many people stopped us to take pictures with us, that was cool, I even ran into a myspace friend "Brad". Then a guy came up to us, we didn’t recognize him from the radio table.
He asked us "Hey do yall wanna come backstage and meet Cyndi Lauper?" Totally excited and confused we said "well duh man! YES! hahahaha" he replied "well wait here Ill go get tickets for you..." so we did, and sure enough he gave us two green triangles for "M&G" meet and greet baby, yeah!
So we waited around to go backstage, all the while missing Dresden Dolls' M&G and Debbie Harry. We saw a bit of her as we held each other's place in line. Finally it was time, as they opened the door my mind like fell out of my head or something, I totally couldn’t think, Im sure I said "oh my god" a hundred times in a row, I just couldn’t believe it was happening again! I have got to be the luckiest girl alive, I sure feel like it! As I stood in line watching Cyndi, I just thought "wow, she is SO ageless, so pretty!" then I realized I was getting a picture with her, and I could post it online this time as she finally had on makeup. She kept glancing at me, maybe it was my hair?
It was my turn, I looked her in the eye and said, "Its me, Lily, homeless girl, San Francisco, remember?" laughing. She quickly remembered me, put her arm around me, got close, looked deep into my eyes, and said "You live here now?" Kimmy replied "no silly we came from Austin to see you!" We chatted close for a second, I told her my mom was babysitting, I wasnt able to get into Canada yet, and thanks for bringing the tour to Texas. I said "now Cyn, you might not like this but I gotta show you, I got your She Bop Moon tattooed on me" I then showed her my She Bop Moon tattoo, she said "oh its OK hon, I gotta tattoo too!" We took some photos and hugged a few more times. Im sure I said I love you at least ten times, I always do that hahaha, I get so Cyn struck hahaha
We were so excited that we went back to the merchant table, I had to ask about the CD and PoMo Bracelet! I ended up buying both. The girl at the table was surprised I knew very much about the bracelets, she wanted me to stick around and inform people about them, I just said "yeah I wish that were my job." cause I do, then walked off to see Ro, Erasure, Margret Cho's rap, and Cyndi!
Cyndi Opened up with Hole In My Heart, a long time favorite of mine. She went on singing many of my favorites from Shine to When You Were Mine, and Goonies! She even did a couple of the new songs, good groove in em, I couldn’t stop dancing! I cried when everyone sang True Colors, I always do.
So, in all it was a badass show! I bought cool stuff, heard great musicians and comedy, I even recorded some Cyn footage, and I, still, am shocked we scored free backstage passes!
We got a taxi back to the hotel and it was a great weekend! I got home and my kid had been good, too! So great, awesome weekend!
06-21-08 True Colors Tour
OH WOW! I gotta say, lastnight was the best night since last year's True Colors Tour!
I had three tickets for the True Colors Tour in Houston Tx so I decided to take my Mom and kiddo, as its been ten years since I first saw Cyndi in concert with my Mom. I also had a ticket for the third row, and a meet and greet pass.
We arrived to the show in a limo (not a strech) because thats what we were suprised with when our hotel called a car, and it was only fifteen bucks! So we got to the show, all dressed up, and people were telling us how cute we were and taking pix with us, fun fun fun, I also ran into quite a few myspace friends, and was given many drinks (Thanks girls!). I picked up the meet and greet pass, we all went in and got settled on the lawn. I missed Wanda Sikes for the Meet and Greet, but it was fast, they gave us the old "line up, shake hands, take two photos, no autographs" lines and treated us like cattle. Cyndi was very sweet, as she always is, and remembered me. She even wanted to meet my mom and son, so she gave me three aftershow passes!
The show was really funny, everyone was great, but Cyndi said it best "the heat fries your brain" she was having a hard time, Im damn sure it was because of the heat, holy crap was it hot! But she really rocked out, and I loved being in the pit third row center, it was awesome! My mom went up to the third row for B-52s, and I went up for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Cyndi Lauper.
After the show we went to the meeting spot and were told she wasnt seeing anyone tonight, then a lady asked, "wait, arent you her friends? yeah, she wanted to see you." Then she escorted us backstage to the Dressing Room building where Cyndi was chatting with a small group of people in the hallway. She saw us and quickly excuesed herself and came over to us. My mom was able to shake her hand and thank her for being such a positive influance in my life. My son was really tired as it was around 11:30, far past his bedtime. I asked him "Who is that?!" and pointed up to Cyndi, he answered so cutely "Sleepy Water" thats how he says her name :lol He really wanted to ride in the elivator and Cyndi was totally happy to ride with him and told him to push the number one button. She hugged on him and said he is really cute, she really like him and he like her too :D We were all hot and very tired, so I snapped one quick photo, hugged her, and thanked her for her time.
In all it was a great night! What a ten year celebration!
