About Me

THE PIONEERING NEW YORK MAKEUP ARTIST PAINTED THE AMERICAN FACE AND REVOLUTIONIZED THE FASHION INDUSTRYMakeup artist Way Bandy was the first beauty superstar. He was there for the ’70s and the ’80s when fashion met disco and sex. He was there when the production values at photo shoots—then called sittings—went through the roof. It was he and his adopted creative family who designed an American look and lifestyle that inspires fashion insiders and image savants to this day. Bandy literally gave it its face. Before Bandy, there was no such thing as an editorial force like Pat McGrath or a mass-market phenomenon like Bobbi Brown. Before Bandy, models were asked to apply their own makeup. “There were no makeup people in New York,” remembers Sandy Linter, a makeup artist who some know as an inspiration for the composite character played by Elizabeth Mitchell in the 1998 film Gia. “When I say there were none, I mean there were maybe only five of us. Way was the only game in town for a long, long time.” Bandy is the reason that a legion of beauty professionals exists today. “He made it an attractive career,” says Maury Hopson, a hairstylist, Bandy’s close friend, and co-executor of his estate. “He elevated the profession.” Mark Jacobs Way arrived in New York in 1966 but his career really got started in 69 when he became director of the makeup department at CHARLES OF THE RITZ (a wonderful makeup line that sadly is no more). Then in 1971 he went on his own as a freelance artist and worked with just about every top model and movie star of the time. There were several celeb’s that preferred to do their own makeup like ELIZABETH TAYLOR, CHER, and BARBRA STREISAND that became huge fans of his. Taylor was quoted as saying “Way is like an artist using a palette”. To me he was like a glamorous ninja…handsome and sleek dressed all in black with his brushes and potions wrapped in a beautiful silk scarf and carried in a woven Japanese basket. He prepared his makeup as if performing an ancient ceremony going about his work like a Zen master. Way was extremely health conscious which made his death from AIDS in 1986 all the more shocking. Way only ate fresh produce and foods he prepared himself. He washed everything he eat in a mixture he prepared. It was a combination of two tablespoons of Bleach to a gallon of water. Near the end he was even known to drink only water that also had a similar preparation, just not as strong. He was as brilliant in the kitchen as he was on the makeup set. He applied his tremendous talents to everything he did.Way’s book “DESIGNING YOUR FACE” was my text book on how to do makeup. It’s out of print now but you may still be able to find a copy. Before retiring at night, Janice Dickinson removes her makeup with mayonnaise, washes her face with yogurt and then splashes apple cider on it as an astringent — a ritual she learned from Makeup Wizard Way BandyIf Way had not been taken from this earth far before his time, he would have most definately started a Cosmetic Company that would have controlled, lead and dominated the way we buy and use makeup today.

************************************************************ *************************** Cher rare with Way Bandy BEST MAKEUP ARTIST EVER! ************************************************************ ***************************Way Bandy was one of the fashion world’s best known and highest-paid makeup artists. Way arrived in New York in 1966 and became a makeup instructor and skin care specialist. In 1969 he became the salon director of the makeup department at Charles of the Ritz. He left in 1971 to become a freelance makeup artist and consultant to cosmetics manufacturers. Bandy was known as a celebrity makeup artist who clients read like a Studio 54's VIP list. He often worked with photographer Francesco Scavullo creating New York's 70's glamour for Vogue,Cosmopolitan and many other high fashion projects. His best selling books "Designing Your Face" and "Styling Your Face" are a great source of information to this day. Bandy shows men and women how to create their own cosmetics mix in fool proof fashion. He mixes and applies makeup much like a painter paints, offering a simple solution and creating a variety of looks. In 1986 Way Bandy died of AIDS at the age of 45. Makeup artists today still refer to Bandy as a great source of inspirationThe Fantasy Face Concept By Way Bandy: Fashion has to do with dreams. It should not be analyzed too much. Those who create and interpret trends and styles into fashion do so for pleasure, for fantasy, because they cannot help it. The deeper thrusts of psychological motivations may be uncovered, discovered by those who have ignored their talents, who have not yet revealed their creative impulses and who therefore must attempt to examine the source of creativity and the joy of being – those who bring darkness to shadow the light. When a cosmetic design begins to surface as popular fashion, one can know that somewhere a dream was dreamed and consciously realized by cosmetic paints styled on a face in the mood and manner of the subconscious fantasy. So I choose to use the colors usually associated with the twilight of dreamland – mauve, purple, soft blues, pinks, rose, gray – in presenting to you a design considered by many to be extreme to the point of unattractiveness – deathly, strange, cold and ghoulish. For others, this cosmetic design will have great appeal. The clothing and fragrance worn with The Fantasy Face should have mystical overtones: a Gothic, penetrating “blue” fragrance with soft edges – one that haunts the wearer, that disturbs others and inspires curiosity. Clothing of soft, movable, drifting fabrics colored by the moon in mysterious tints that chill the imagination, awaken the viewer to enchantment – organdy, chiffon, slipper satin, taffeta draped and flowing in a mist of Impressionist palette. The Fantasy Face has no hard edges. Every color is blended until it becomes a tint. And still the strength abides. The design attracts not by strong lines but by choice of coloration and placement and technique of application. Its strength lies in the whole. Do not plan to go out the first time you attempt to apply this design. This one takes practice (unless you are already a cosmetic artist familiar with these techniques). You must work to perfect these application techniques. Because the face is contrived and complicated, it is imperative that hair be minimally important. A small, neat hair style or even a wrapped, perhaps jeweled head will be most suitable with The Fantasy Face.Way Bandy Fantasy Face can be found in his book Styling Your Face
