Chelsea Drugstore

About Me

The Chelsea Drugstore began life as four friends hanging out listening to Revolver, Blonde On Blonde and Exile On Main St, watching the world go by somewhere over the knee high lawn from the back deck of a house, on a hill, in sunny Lysterfield, Melbourne, many years ago. Nathan, Adam, Leigh and Scott were also, when the spirit possessed them, known to play music of their own, much to their neighbour’s delight (despair). They did radical things with two guitars, bass and drums, such as play 60’s inspired 4 chord jams in musty rehearsal studios and eat greasy burgers in between. The likes of which where never known to anonymous garage bands before or since. Continuing this groundbreaking trend they then succeeded to play a handful of small gigs and record a couple of demos at a radio station and in a friend’s loungeroom before sadly succumbing to the pressures of fame and fortune. Much merriment was had by all, however, as people are known to sometimes do, they grow apart and so the band was no more. Until…

Shortly thereafter Nathan was inspired by an encounter with San Fransiscan, Kelley Stoltz after a classic sweaty pub gig at the Tote, to begin a home recording project. Cottoning on to the DIY idea quickly, Scott soon followed suit and their collaborations gave new life to the Chelsea Drugstore. With the aid of original band members and friends and one enterprising Swede, they produced their first album which they called The Chelsea Drugstore in memory of their time as a band and in the absence of a better title. The album, much to the delight of those who watched it grow, even received some airplay from that bastion of community radio and staunch supporter of independent and underrepresented music, PBSfm 106.7 (bless your little cotton socks Claire Stuchberry) and also Triple J courtesy of Caroline Tran.

In it’s current incarnation the Chelsea Drugstore is primarily a recording project for Nathan and Scott’s creative ventures great and small, and for anyone else who cares (can be coerced) to contribute. The more the merrier. The Chelsea Drugstore continues to embrace the DIY ethos and the many marvels of home recording inspired by Kelley Stoltz. They have long since moved from the house on the hill but still like to sit and watch the world go by and hopefully write a really catchy song about it.

Three Chord Theory

It's been a long, long, long time. After a considerable hiatus, 2nd album 'Three Chord Theory', was finally finished. Following on from 'The Chelsea Drugstore', 'Three Chord Theory' was also recorded at home in Malvern, Sunbury and Daylesford. Nathan, inspired by a move to country Victoria contributed five of the album tracks and enlisted the aid of Kev Whitely who was responsible for drums and percussion as well as mixing and mastering the album. The album is a slight departure from 'The Chelsea Drugstore' in that it has more of a country influence and perhaps a more melancholy mood and pace due to events, good and bad, that transpired over the past twelve months and Nathan's period of obsession with the Grateful Dead. Some of the songs have been added here including 'It Doesn't Matter' and 'If You Wanna Know'. Hope you enjoy.

Sounds Like: Reviews for Three Chord Theory:

"From the opening chords of 'Love that country fill' to the last bar of the final song 'All for show' I was hooked. And it wasn't just the incredible cache of catchy yet melancholic songs, rollickly outstanding music and thoughtful lyrics. These songs spoke to me...

...this is about the best record I've heard from a bunch of blokes since the last Smallgoods long-player...

...Three Chord Theory is a truly great album and I hope these guys continue following their heart and making music for themselves, that, like all the best honest music, makes other fall in love with it to."
