Kolo is a magical action by closing the circle, which is a metod of protecting the community from everything that could harm it.National Ensemble's programs present a prototype and model for an ethno-show, because this program presents real, national treasure whose style is made and modulated for present time and stage, but still remaining in the spirit of tradition.
Serbian National Ensemble KOLO was founded by Serbian Goverment in 1948. It is the only professional traditional ensemble in Serbia, and the first professional traditional ensemble of that kind on Balkans.
"Kolo" toured all over the world; performed over 5 000 times in front of 10 million people, in the most eminent concert halls:
Metropolitan Opera, Sydney Opera House, Schayo Palace, Carnegie hall, Royal festival hall, Koln Opera house, Feniche Theatre, Amsterdam Opera house, E hall, Cambridge Theatre, Grand Casino in Geneva etc.
In 2003. Kolo has been honored with Vuk Karadzic award of first level, which acclaimed 55 years of its successful work. In the year of 2008 we are going to celebrate our 60th birthday!
Ensemble Kolo has more than 120 choreographies in their repertoire.
Kolo can present more than 40 different programs from all regions of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina where Serbian people live. The repertoire involves:
- Special programs
- Programs of traditional music and songs
- Programs of traditional ball dances and songs
- Programs of ethno-theatre
- Music-stage programs
- Shows of traditional costumes
Ensemble "Kolo" performs in over 2 000 original traditional costumes. These costumes are priceless because of their museum value and some date back from the 19th century.
During the year of 2006. KOLO had 83 performances in front of approximately 47500 people.
National ensemble KOLO also has a special programme which is based on modern style of dancing the Serbian traditional dances. When performing this kind of dances, the music and the costumes are also modernized. The first time Kolo took part in such project was when making a commercial advertisement for one of the sponsors. After the commercial, Kolo performed another modern choreography in Bangkok, on the Grand Closing Ceremony of the Universiade 2007, as a part of the project WELCOME TO SERBIA - Universiade 2009. This choreography has been performed also in Belgrade at many special occasions considering sports.
