When people hear Ethanols music for the first time, the reaction is usually one of genuine surprise. Ethanol is a band that doesn't fit neatly into a category. In fact, they've spent much of their five plus years together continously redefining the limits of rock n'roll and just where it can go. Ethanol consists of the Hooper brothers, Ben on guitar and lead vox,David on drums and a soul on sleeve bass player named Will Gilmer. The Hooper brothers love for music grew out of the local punk scene and it inspired them to pick up instruments. Much of their early music was based on the sounds of The Dead Kennedys and The Misfits. Will Gilmer brought to the table a love for multiple styles of music, adding to the Hoopers punk pallet some experimental groove. Ethanol came together rather spontaneously after the Hooper brothers played in a few punk rock bands around Atlanta and decided to try something a bit different. They started playing together with Will in high school, mowing through note for note covers of multiple genres. Discovering that they could take their music in interesting and brave directions, they formed a musical and emotional bond with one another, learning to play off the other man with a sense of good timing and the ability to serve the song above all. They gradually gained local attention for their noticable musicianship. What started out as a few kids in a basement playing loud rock music became three dudes with a flare for experimentation. Ethanol pulls from influences high and low to craft music that can be both insanely catchy and equally as dark and brooding. One might hear echoes of Lou Reed and snippets of a mid career Neil Young as well as guitar arrangements reminiscent of Tool. With Ethanol, there have never been true limitations. It's always helped that each member brings a different musical style to the proceedings. Once they get their recipe together in the pot, Ethanol tends to create intricate, "out of the box rock" that truly cannot be easily tagged. They don't set out to write anything a certain way. It just happens the way magic tends to do. As much as folks have raved about their recorded music, it is Ethanols one of a kind live show that must be experienced first hand. A mixture of balls to the wall showmanship, irreverant stage banter and daredevil stage stalking, Ethanol is one of the premier live acts to catch in the Atlanta area. Like Elvis Costello, they'd like to think that their "aim is true". Never wavering in their quest for a larger audience, the boys have devoted their very souls to crafting compelling, unique rock music with something for everybody. Call it a mission statement. They call it life.... (a band summary by Luchador Rick)
