KEITH MITCHELL - JAMAICAN TENOR

About Me

Born Saturday, 17 May 1986 in Kingston, Jamaica. Attended various Preparatory level educational institutions such as Dunrobin Preparatory, Hydel Preparatory and Stella Maris Preparatory in St. Andrew. An above average child in academic performance, but noticeably brilliant and unique in my outlook on life and level of maturity for my age. He later attended the Ardenne High School (also in St. Andrew) in 1997 to graduate in 2002 (grades 7 to 11) and did two further years of study (grades 12 to 13).He then attended the Mico Teachers' College (now the Mico University College) on Marescaux Road in Kingston for one year (2004 - 2005), during which he studied Music & Reading (Literacy Development). At the end of the year, he decided to leave to attend the Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts, located on Arthur Wint Drive.Currently a student at the Edna Manley College, he ispursuing a Diploma in Traditional (Classical) Vocal Performance and is scheduled to graduate in 2008. He is training with Pauline Forrest-Watson, head of the Voice Department at the College since the 1980's; he has also done some study with her husband, Curtis Watson (both of whom studied in Russia). He is an intuitive musician mostly; his compositions reflect that sort of perspective, where often his work cannot be categorized easily, if at all, into any pre-existing box. His compositions are very expressive, as are his arrangements. He composes much more than he arranges, but embraces the possiblities that come with each new burst of inspiration. He is a performer, and has performed for many different types of functions as a soloist - from Book Launches to Anniversaries, Weddings and Funerals. One of his more memorable performances as a novice performer was in his first year at the Edna Manley College where, only three days before an important occasion (the official launch of Education Week) he was asked to represent the College at the function. The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) officially recorded the event. A short time after, he was advised by the Director of the School of Music, Roger Williams (a professional pianist and educator, who happened to have been his accompanying pianist at the function), that a letter had been sent to him thanking them for their contribution to the event and praising his work. The letter was subsequently put on his file. Ever since, he has been training rigorously to achieve his vocal objectives and those of his professor. As a solo performer, he has also had his fair share of concert appearances. As a chorister, he has performed widely. While at the Ardenne High School, he was invited to join a mass choir performing at King's House for one of many visits by the Queen of England to Jamaica. The mass choir, under the Directorship of the accomplished Noel Dexter performed for the Queen, to much acclaim. He has also performed with the Edna Manley College Choir of 2006 at the Governor General's Annual Carol Service held at King's House in December 2006; under the Directorship of Roger Williams, and another amazingly gifted and energetic Director - visiting professor from Berea College in Kentucky, USA, Dr. Kathy Bullock. She was loved by everyone who had the opportunity to know her and experience her love for her work. The Choir was highly praised for its performances at the event, which was televised.Jamaica and, indeed other parts of the world, celebrated the Bicentennary of the Abolition of the Legislation associated with the Trans-Atlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans. Under the Directorship of Michael Burnett, an English composer and educator, who composed a Cantata in celebration of the occasion, a mass choir and insturmental ensemble, comprised of many of Jamaica's leading vocalists and musicians, performed this work on October 6 and 7, 2007 in St. Andrew and Montego Bay, St. James respectively; with the invaluable support of the British High Commission in Jamaica. His plans for the immediate future are to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance at the Edna Manley College upon his successful completion of the Diploma course, which will require an extra year of study at the College. After which, he is planning to apply for scholarships to pursue a Master's Degree overseas.

My Interests

Music:

Influences: As a composer, one of my major stylistic influences has been the Baroque style of composition; particularly the stylings of German-born composer and organist Georg Friedrich Händel. The textural complexity and melodic inclinations of the Baroque have been very influential for me as a composer. Indeed, quite a few of my compositions have a very Händelian approach to harmony and structure. My mother, an avid music collector and enthusiast, raised me on the music of Enya and Yanni, among many others; hence, the musical language of the New Age and Western Art genres were the ones that helped to direct my earliest musical thought.I am a lover of African-American Gospel music, Celtic Music, Indian Music, Latin-American music, and numerous other musical genres. When I write, however, my music takes on a life of its own, and so after the first idea, the music tends to write itself much of the time. From that perspective, my various influences just happen to show up here and there in the work, instead of me deliberately trying to follow the style of a particular composer or performer.

Today has been a pretty strange day.  Well, I got to school, and I heard news that one of the past students was killed in an automobile accident last evening.  I mean, my emotional response ...
