Gachupín is the band of former Cordero/Bee and Flower band mates Lynn Wright (Becker/Barnes/Wright Trio, The Wiremen) and Jon Petrow (The Cloud Room), experimental rock pioneer Tony Maimone (John Langford, Pere Ubu, Book of Knots) and master drummer Chris Michael (Coba). Started as a studio side project to explore the fusion of Cordero's Latin and African elements with Chris Michael’s vast repertoire of folk rhythms and Maimone’s inimitable bass playing, the band has expanded to include a diverse crew of musicians from New York’s jazz, Afro-Colombia, and downtown rock scenes. Blending African guitar stylings with Brazilian and Afro-Colombian rhythms, they draw on electric funk era Miles Davis and the more groove-oriented elements of the contemporary music world to create an instrumental hybrid that is danceable but still an interesting listen for the lead-footed brothers and sisters among us.
Their debut CD was recorded by Tony Maimone and mixed by Joel Hamilton at Studio G Brooklyn in 2006.
