The Stars are Deafening's first incarnation was under the band name Until Then, Until Then started playing together at the end of the summer in 2004, when Josh Coburn (guitar/lead vocals), Tom Leech(guitar/vocals), Joe Earley (bass guitar/ vocals) and Mark Deighton (drums/cowbell) - four high school mates, all started playing their instruments. Over the next year and a half the band started writing and gigging across Stoke, before recording a few tracks (Citadel and Draw a Picture) in February 2006.
Unfortunately a shoulder problem in the Spring of 2006 meant Mark had to take the drumming a bit easier and the band took a bit of a break, playing a couple of very memorable gigs over the next with stand in drummers Joe Gilligan (Trial of Origin) Good Old Ginger Nick, and Pete Richards (From The Captain), and a couple of one-off acoustic sets.
During the period in which Mark's shoulder was playing up, Tom, Joe and Coburn worked on a alternative post-rock side project entitled 'The Stars are Deafening'. Using only basic home recording tools, the band was able to create a fresh and different sound which was not only an exciting experience to construct, but further inspired Until Then to get writing songs which did not fit into the often boring and predictable genre of rock/industrial music.
Then came the start of summer 2007, Marks shoulder now much better, the bands writing skills much more developed and the new songs sounding epic, a new band name had to be chosen because of some american pop-punk fags who take themselves way too seriously copyrighting the name Until Then.
Now The Stars Are Deafening are heading in a new more experimental direction, still taking influence from bands like Biffy Clyro, Radiohead, Sucioperro and The Smashing Pumpkins, but now being more heavily influenced by experimental music from Oceansize, Logh, 65daysofstatic, The Fall of Troy, and Aereogramme. We are currently fully immersed in writing and rehearsing ready to record new material and storm across local venues this summer.
