About Me

I, John James O’Connor, was born on March 29, 1984 in Chester, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. Music has always been a big part of my life; both my mom and my sister studied classical violin, and I played cello when I was younger. Eventually, when junior high came around, I started getting interested in acting, and got involved in school plays, theater camps, that kind of thing. At one point, I even landed a small part as part of a youth chorus in an off-Broadway production of Joseph and the Amazing Techicolor Dreamcoat in Wilmington, Delaware. But around that same time, I turned 13, I first picked up a bass guitar, and then decided that I’d rather be a rock star and make my own music. I got exposed to classic rock bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, KISS, Black Sabbath, Queen, Van Halen, and Metallica, and I knew there was no turning back.
Since I moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1999, I’ve had a sporadic, yet very productive music career. I spent all 4 years of high school playing bass in the school band, which lead to a variety of outside gigs, local touring, awards, and other smaller accolades. I also spent a year and a half as a member of one of Tampa’s greatest local bands, Lives’ Page; we toured up and down the entire eastern seaboard and collectively shared the stage with national acts like Shinedown, Collective Soul, Flyleaf, Phase 9, and The Showdown. I’ve also played with other Tampa bands such as Shadow Rising, W.M.P., Dragline, and Cobalt Blue. I haven’t totally given up on acting either; during a brief stint at the University of Tampa, I was an on-air personality at WUTV and co-starred in a student-produced parody of “The Matrix.” I thought I made a pretty convincing agent….
When I'm not pursuing my Masters Degree in Geography and Urban Planning, I love to play, write, and record music. Over the past few months, I've also been having a lot of fun recording myself playing acoustic guitar and singing some randomly chosen cover songs, all of which are available here on myspace as well as my YouTube channel at: www.youtube.com/jxcphoenix.
