I was born to a nomadic family in a small village called Amchok, in northeastern Tibet, in the Amdo province. Like all nomadic children in Tibet, lulled by the whistling of the wind and the songs of the shepherds, he grew up surrounded by yaks, sheep, goats, and horses, on a wide open plain.From the age of twelve, music flowed from him. The natural talent he is gifted with was immediately recognized by a high Tibetan Buddhist monk who taught him to sing Tibetan Opera and taught him to play the traditional musical instruments.While still quite young, he was accepted to the Machur Institue of Performing Arts in Amdo, and there perfected his studies of lute, flute, and mandolin with professors renowned throughout Tibet. He began writing his own songs.n 1996 Amchok Gompo joined the ranks of the few professional artists in Tibet when he put on his first show in Shinyang. His career quickly took off. His religious and politically sensitive songs quickly swept across Tibet. As a result, he was the target of growing repression from the Chinese government, and in March 2000, decided to flee his native country because he could no longer live there in peace. Together with a fellowship of fifteen travelers, he managed to cross the Himalayas and arrived in India safe and sound.He met the Dalai Lama for the first time, who encouraged him to enter TIPA, the Tibetan Institue of Performing Arts, that unites the best Tibetan musicians in exile. Amchok continued to compose music and write songs inspired by Tibet, recorded many albums, and taught traditional Amdo folk songs to children in exile.He travelled with TIPA and in the course of events, immigrated to Canada in 2005. Since then, Amchok participates regularly in various tours, the most recent of which was a show at the Canada Multicultural Festival in Toronto.His Holiness the Dalai Lama will give an historic Public Talk on Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 PM in Ottawa.
