SHAKEN is a San Francisco Bay Area band that started in the spring of 2002. The band’s purpose has been from the beginning to generate music with new blends of ska, folk-rock and alt-rock. This ballsy mix of musical styles creates a unique new sound that the band has been wielding to “shake†up the music scene in Northern California. The music is high energy and soulful sweet from a band that has everything to say about the pros and cons of relationships. Many people have compared Shaken to No Doubt, Sarah McLachlan, The Pretenders and Sheryl Crow. Their musical influences delve deeper then that and include Ani Difranco, U2, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Black Sabbath, The Police, Liz Phair, Rush, Bloc Party, Anthrax, Coheed and Cambria, Lamb of God, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Joni Mitchell, A Perfect Circle, Miles Davis, Ivy, Tower of Power, Otep, The Grateful Dead, Brad Paiseley, Shadows Fall, and Dierks Bently. Listen closely and you can hear each one of them. Shaken isn’t afraid to experiment and while their core is “rock basedâ€, they refuse to let themselves be limited to one style of music. ‘Mega’ Dave Henderson and ‘Mini’ Dave Jurgens believe they should be innovative but not duplicative. But above all have fun, enjoy the moment, and entertain all those who come to watch and listen. This theme is obvious in their new CD titled Prose and Cons. The band serves up a blistering ska-punk shot of energy with the song La Di Da, a song about not worrying about what has happened yesterday and enjoying the moment, partying, and having fun. The album also focuses on serious subjects such as child abuse with Yesterday’s Gone. Yet another topic is covered with Wasting Time, which talks about people who from day one planned to leave a relationship but still waste your time by staying in it anyway. As too many artists today focus on songs with little to no meaning, it is clearly obvious that Shaken understand the message in the song is what music is really about. With lyrics that have been influenced from events in the band member’s lives, each song is meant to cover everyday life. This includes everything from relationships (failed as well as successful), spiritual mysticism, recovering from abuse, and just having fun.
However, Shaken also realizes that music is a way to release all the frustrations in life. While they take their music seriously, they don’t forget that it’s still entertainment. They are not out to change the world, more like allowing people a chance to relax from it.
