“Some of the most memorable hooks heard on any release this year…excellent.â€
The West Australian.
“(The Reserves) will become a prominent feature of the local scene in the coming 12 months.â€
X-Press Magazine
Coming four years after the release of their debut EP (2006’s locally applauded Waiting For No One), The Reserves’ sophomore 2010 release sees the four piece refining the template set down by their first offering, and building on it with wiser songwriting heads, engaging guitar hooks and soaring vocal harmonies.
No surprise given the bands work ethic, which saw them both demo tracks for the EP and record it in a secluded house in Margaret River, in WA’s southwest. Its this work ethic, coupled with an intense live show, which has also garnered The Reserves support slots for the likes of Gyroscope, Birds Of Tokyo, Trial Kennedy and British India.
From the driving rhythms and bassline grooves of opener “Dealing With Ghostsâ€, the pedal to the metal rock hooks of “The Deep End†and “Empty Soul Syndromeâ€, to the dark and imposing tones of “Fuses To Flames (Save Me)â€, this is all round a bolder, more confident outfit. With his unique vocal style, singer Matt Pirga has captured something truly special on this record, with a palette covering enough raw emotion to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is this dynamic which gives the band its edge.Formed in 2005, The Reserves wasted no time recording their debut EP “Waiting For No Oneâ€, releasing it to rave reviews, and gigging relentlessly following its release. 2008 saw the band release double A side “The Road/In The End†which along with tracks from their EP saw healthy RTR and Triple J airplay.
2009 saw changes for the band, with departing guitarist John Foley replaced by Shaun McIlroy (Atvena’s Wake). Joining Ben Cocker on guitar, his musical background and proficiency on guitar holds the band in good stead for the future. Rounded out by a rhythm section comprising vocalist/bass player Matt Pirga and drummer/backing vocalist Michael Yurisich, The Reserves are well poised for an assault on rock music fans far and wide.
With the release of their brand new EP, 2010 is set to be a huge year for The Reserves, with several tours planned and their first film clip (fuses to flames) also in the works. The band is already busy writing new material, with their debut long player set to be recorded late 2010.
