James Day and the Fish Fry

About Me

Since the band's first show in Oct 2003 they have garnered regional attention due to their focus on dancable good time blues music. Playing vintage tunes with a modern spin and great songwriting in their orginal compostions, James Day and the Fish Fry are a “full service” Jump Blues Band that loves all styles of the blues and share this affection with their audience. A six piece band specializing in West Coast Jump, Chicago Blues & New Orleans R&B, has performed in festivals in Europe and venues along the Eastern seaboard.
The band’s mission is to provide danceable blues music with warm retro tones of the 1940’s-1960’s. Keeping the blues alive while respecting the old masters and traditions while creating a sound of their own. Their debut CD features every style of the blues: Chicago, West Coast Jump, Delta, Zydeco, Rumbas, Swing, Swamp pop and New Orleans street parades. It is played on satellite radio and roots music stations in the US and overseas. A brew of influences from the 1940’s to the present.
If you like juke joint backbeat drums, slapping stand up bass, Boogie woogie piano, fat tones guitar and honking harmonica. If you like to dance or soak up some old school blues then make it out for a wild swinging house party of TURBO CHARGED JUMP BLUES!

James Day & the Fish Fry’s Blue Latitudes (Neon Blue 2012) covers the map of blues & roots styles, with smart songwriting touching on jump(“No Meat to Tough” shows some of Louis Jordon’s humor),zydeco ("Zydeco Boogaloo”), Sun-style rockabilly (“Money Smarts & Charms"),slow blues(“Weather Blues”),hokum (“Screen Scratching Woman”), hard swinging blues a la William Clarke (“Next New Thing”), Latin sounds (“Blowing Smoke”),New Orleans street parades (“Festival Time”),and snaky swamp grooves (“Muscadine Wine”). Day is a likeable vocalist and his harp playing is refreshingly outside the box. Guitarist Mark Shewchuk operates on a similarly quirky basis, spinning unexpected lines. A lot of fun.

If you want to “Jump” this is the right way! James and his band are one of the coolest surprises from the independent blues releases in these last months. Fresh sound……Groovy rhythms!

I'm certain this one's gonna be a hit amongst our listeners here at Radio Ung in Kristiansand, Norway. It sure looks like these guys know just what it's all about.!

The CD, Blue Latitudes is about the music & travels of James Day & the Fish Fry Band. …About Southern cities & their culture…. Awesome sounds, a select variety to keep you listening over & over.!

Day’s harmonica has one of the fattest and juiciest tones I've ever heard and I do mean ever. His technique is impressive and his mind is open - those to things rarely go together. As a good singer James also writes interesting songs - avoiding over-used terms and clichés. Together with a super-tight band made of classy musicians James Day & the Fish Fry have recorded a CD that has many faces and never gets boring. For blues fans in general and harp fans in particular this is a CD to buy!!

James Day and the Fish Fry have found their sound- a brew of influences from the 40’s to the present. I have heard just about every blues style from this former Cresent City native’s band; Chicago, West Coast Jump, Delta, Zydeco, Latin, Swamp Pop, New Orleans Blues and some I haven’t figured out yet.!
