About Me

One of the fun things about following Jesus is that life seems to be more of an adventure. Mine started at Minnehaha Falls, hit up the Pacific, Atlantic, Cape of Good Hope, and the muddy Potomac. Now it's led back to the chilly banks of the Mississippi. That's awesome!
Although back to where I'm from, I'm not home. It continues to be a joy, though, to figure out how all those things in my sidebar are gonna help get it done in this new place. Right now I make money as a freelance writer and an organizer for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and I try to avoid spending it by doing really cheap stuff in Minneapolis (open mics, hikes, using the library, etc.)
Quizzes are lame, but this is cool:
.. You scored as Evangelical Holiness/Wesleyan. You are an evangelical in the Wesleyan tradition. You believe that God's grace enables you to choose to believe in him, even though you yourself are totally depraved. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives you assurance of your salvation, and he also enables you to live the life of obedience to which God has called us. You are influenced heavly by John Wesley and the Methodists.

My Interests

Hiking,
canoeing,
playing volleyball and basketball,
reading for fun and profit,
reading and writing blogs,
practicing effective communication,
researching,
practicing politics,
following Jesus,
fixing global relations,
listening to acoustic music,
and looking for employment are all things I actually dig.

Also, I love shooting pool.

I'd like to meet:

Anybody, for twenty minutes. To last longer, though, we'd probably share fondness for Jesus, acoustic music, camping, progressive politics, Minnesota, shooting pool, talking strategy, or other kinds of world-shaping (or -weary) relaxation.

Or we might share a professional interest in making the world a better place!

I'm especially interested in folks doing (or wanting to start) a Bible study in northeast Minneapolis, and especially disinterested in people trying to recruit for their frikkin' book clubs!

Music:

Greg Brown, John Prine, Mason Jennings

Movies:

Magnolia, On the Waterfront, The Hustler (Paul Newman), Spider-Man 1 and 2, Clerks, Swingers, Rocky Horror Picture Show

Television:

Simpsons--they're always on, but you have to make an appointment to watch anything else!

Books:

Barbara Kingsolver, Jack Kerouac, Raymond Carver, Robert A. Heinlein, Robert Anton Wilson, C.S. Lewis. (Yeah, except for Lewis I'm an American literature junkie.) You will know me better if you've read the Illuminatus Trilogy, On the Road, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Screwtape Letters, and Professor Wellstone Goes to Washington.

Heroes:

Those who act on God's call to try to make the world different. Dead people include Paul Wellstone and Hubert Humphrey. Living ones include Russ Feingold and Mishonda Baldwin .

People who change lives just because of how they live, like Tony Campolo or the thousands of people across America and throughout global Christianity who are fighting for food for the hungry, clothing for the naked, freedom for the oppressed, and the right of a community to organize and live off of its own labor.

Pastors who preach an understanding of God that Jesus would recognize and parishioners who truly heed the countercultural call to be in, but not of, this world.

Homeless people.
