Photo Cube Mike Roman & The Tellstars has been one of the most popular and enduring groups in the Chicago land area. The band’s multicultural appeal has contributed to their success and has made the group’s longevity possible. The Tellstars unique approach and interpretation of Latin rock music has been the band’s trademark along with their original compositions and versatile arrangements featured in the groups recording and live performances.Their musical ability to duplicate and interpret the sound of Santana began even before Mike Roman jammed with super rock star Carlos Santana and his original band in the San Francisco Bay area.Besides Mike Roman, a melodic guitarist and leader/founder of the band, The Tellstars original lineup included keyboardist extraordinaire Eli Rios, Jr., the late bass virtuoso and lead vocalist Mark Davis, and prolific drummer and lead vocalist Steve Missal, who went on to record White Wedding on Billy Idol’s debut album and also toured with guitar hero, Ted Nugent. The Tellstars started out as the opening act for many of Chicago’s top recording groups, including The Buckinghams, The Shadows of Knight, The Ides of March, The Cryan’ Shames, The Colony VI, and The Gentrys, to name a few.The Tellstars have performed on stage with the internationally known guitar legend Jose Feliciano, the late great Tito Puente and the late queen of the salsa, Celia Cruz. The band has also appeared with the original Mambo Kings, Armando Peraza, the late Mongo Santamaria, Ray Barreto, and also with Jimi Hendrix’s drummer and backup vocalist, the phenomenal, late, great Buddy Miles. The Tellstars have also appeared at popular venues including the Radisson Star Plaza Theatre, the Riviera Theatre, the Apollo Theatre, The Congress Theatre, the Rialto Theatre, and at Chicago's Premier Lake Front Petrillo Music Shell. The group has also performed at several college concerts, top city and suburban night clubs, and at summer festivals. They have also made live appearances on Chicago radio and television shows broadcast across the nation showcasing their musical multi-talent for their large and loyal fan club. Most recently, The Tellstars have recorded and performed in concert with two Latin rock legends and Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame members, Jose “Chepito†Areas and Michael Shrieve, the original percussion section of the world famous Santana band. The Tellstars also recorded and performed with Richard Bean, composer and lead vocalist with the Malo and Sapo bands. The Tellstars featuring Jose “Chepito†Areas was the opening act for Jorge Santana and Malo at the 2005 Viva Chicago Latin Festival at Grant Park."Cha Cha Time!" the Tellstar's new cd contains twelve original compositions written by Mike Roman, Eli Rios, Jr., Abel Guardiola, Lead Vocalist and Guitarist, Joe "Vato" Guillen, Lead Vocalist and Percussionist, and Michael Angelo Roman, Lead Guitar and Tenor Sax.
