Dion Roy is a fresh face in the music scene, fusing his acoustic abilities, knack for writing an unforgettable hook, and electronic music passion into one cohesive rock sound. Born in Namibia, raised in South Africa, later raised in New Jersey and now a true New Yorker at heart; Dion has lived and breathed the downtown / Lower East Side music scene for the past 8 years. He has played as a bassist in several bands which lead him to numerous NYC venues (The Bitter End, The Luna Lounge, Pianos, Kenny’s Castaways, etc), to open for high-profile acts like The Donnas, and to tour throughout the North-Eastern College Circuit.
After years of flowing from one creative project to the next and keeping his collaborations and personal productions low key, this introspective and mysterious musician has moved on from group bassist, to solo vocalist and songwriter gearing up for a debut release of his self-titled EP.
Dion’s soothing voice and mesmerizing lyrics come together to create a sound that hits at the core and evokes nostalgia in his listener. The intensity and sincerity with which he plays draws his crowd in and shocks the listener from time to time, by how this shy crooner can make statements that are at times raw and brutally honest. While personal to him, the simple situations of which he sings are relatable to all yet so much more complex than meets the eye.
The seemingly political articulations or even frustrations that weigh on his conscience without direct association are touched upon by his satire in his writing style. Inspired by songwriters like Ryan Adams and electronic music such as Postal Service, Dion’s song-writing style is forward-thinking in terms of how he believes the industry should change. He has fully adopted a faith in the listener campaign by making his music free to the public in the hopes that those who wish to support him will invest in different ways like coming to see him live and merchandise.
In his other life, Dion owns and manages a Manhattan-based PR firm with a specialization in music, and uses this day-to-day knowledge as fuel in the belief that through social media and the indie music movement, anyone with a passion and a unique talent now has the opportunity to share their music and succeed in this tumultuous industry.
