About Me

Willie Romero was born in New York City. At an early age he quickly identified with his heritage and love of Salsa music. Soon afterward, his instrument of choice became the conga. He attended Arturo Junior High School where he was a member of the symphony band. He learned to read music and play different time signatures, and upon graduating, he was recommended to join the Jazz Mobile.The first band Willie played with professionally was with Santiago Ceron. Shortly after, he started getting noticed by other musicians, such as Jose Alberto "El Canario." As a result, Willie gained practical experience on the music scene. In addition, he had the privilege of recording his first album with El Canario, Sueno Contigo, which went gold and then platinum. Other notable names whom Willie has had the privilege of performing with are Tito Nieves, Raulin Rosendo, Van Lester, Flex-Flex, Dominec, and Chino Nunez and Friends.Willie's mentor and best friend, Eddie Montalvo, introduced him to Johnny Pacheco, whom Willie has had the honor of recording and performing with for 16 years. One of Willie's most gratifying moments was when he performed and recorded with the Guarachera del Mundo, La Reina Celia Cruz. Willie recorded on Celia Cruz' Grammy Award-winning album, La Negra Tiene Su Tumbao. Prior to Celia Cruz's passing, Willie had the privilege of touring with her for over ten years, accompanied by the Johnny Pacheco OrchestraWillie has performed all over the world, including Africa, Spain, Colombia, Paris, Aruba, Venezuela, Guadalupe, Japan, Puerto Rico, Italy Peru, Holland, Finland, and Belgium. Willie's future endeavors include owning a music school in order to teach those less fortunate.
