About Me

Renata BrattCellist and clinician Renata Bratt (www.renatabratt.com) is president of the International Association for Jazz Education String Caucus, past chair of the 2007 American String Teachers Association Alternative String Styles Steering Committee and serves on the Kuumbwa Jazz Center Board in Santa Cruz, CA.
She writes articles and has been interviewed about improvisation and fiddle styles for New Directions Cello Ink, Strings Magazine, ASTA, Jazziz and the Suzuki Music Association.
Her latest CDs, "Jazz Trio 2006", with violinist Martin Norgaard and pianist Bert Ligon (Fat Chance Records) and "Great Big Taters, fiddle music on cellos" (Open Path Music) are available through CDBaby.
Her newest book, "The Modern Method for Cello, Book 1," "The Fiddling Cellist," “Celtic Grooves for Two Cellists, 47 Irish and Scottish Tunes” and the arrangements for Dix Bruce’s “BackUp Trax: Old Time & Fiddle Tunes for Cello” are all available through Mel Bay Publications.
She has taught classical styles, jazz improvisational and fiddling techniques at national string workshops for children and adults (including the Mancini Institute, The Mark O'Connor String Conference, Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling Camp, IAJE, ASTA, MENC and Suzuki institutes and conferences), been an invited recitalist at the Spanish Embassy in Rome, and is a past president of the Suzuki Music Association of California.
Ms. Bratt received her Ph.D. in Music from the University of California at San Diego.
Renata has performed with luminaries such as Liz Carroll and John Doyle, Darol Anger and Alasdair Fraser and played back-up with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, David Sanborn, Lyle Lovett, and Dionne Warwick.
Rolling Stone dubbed her an "ace performer" for her work recording and touring with alternative rocker Cindy Lee Berryhill's Garage Orchestra.
In addition to teaching private students, Renata teaches cello at the Santa Cruz Waldorf Elementary School, the Pacific Elementary School in Davenport, CA and beginning orchestra through the Cabrillo Suzuki Strings program.
