About Me

It is no small thing, this, for a woman: freedom.

In a world far, far away, a girl was born on the afternoon of July 29th in the year 1979 in Gainesville, Florida. She grew up in the small town of Palatka, which she did not like, but now can acknowledge has helped to shape her into who she is today.
She would grow to the towering height of 5ft 6in, with long dark brown, curly hair and hazel-green eyes that seem to be more green at times than others. Her heritage is made up of good ol' American and Native American Indian, with the possibility of unknown others mixed in. A sibling would tease her for her "almond-shaped" eyes on occasion. This girl grew to a woman of a fiery nature; a compassionate individual who "philosophised" on occasion, yet tried to put these thoughts into action. She holds her family and close friends very dear....
Depending on a person's relationship to her, they will know her as one of the following (or at least a variation of these): Melissa, Mel, Meliss, Melly, Peanut, Nut, ... No one in their right mind would call her by her family nickname if they valued their own life. Only a select few still call her that, of which she graciously allows.
Some of her strengths are creativity, a strange sense of humour, loyalty, courage, generosity, and open-mindedness; while some of her weaknesses are oversensitivity, pridefulness, intolerance, and being demanding.
The woman currently works as a full-time secretary, as well as being a full-time university student. She is in her second year of a BA (Honours) Literature with the Open University .
Goals and Inspirations:
She aspires to be a well-known writer, to be known for her talent to entertain children and adults alike, as well as her compassionate drive to better the world through her writing and her activism. She also wants to travel the world, not just the well-known places like Paris, Italy, and Australia, but the lesser known countries of Africa, Europe, and South/Central Americas.
She would like to teach the younger generations, but to also work towards an MA in Creative Writing or specialise in a particular literature genre/field. Another aspiration is to go abroad and teach English to children of third world countries.

Favourite Quotes:
As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let you down probably will. You will have your heart broken probably more than once and it's harder every time. You'll break hearts too, so remember how it felt when yours was broken. You'll fight with your best friend. You'll blame a new love for things an old one did. You'll cry because time is passing too fast, and you'll eventually lose someone you love. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, and love like you've never been hurt because every sixty seconds you spend upset is a minute of happiness you'll never get back.

Don't be afraid that your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin.

If you come softly
as the wind within the trees
you may hear what I hear
see what sorrow sees.

You Are a Visionary Soul
You are a curious person, always in a state of awareness.
Connected to all things spiritual, you are very connected to your soul.
You are wise and bright: able to reason and be reasonable.
Occasionally, you get quite depressed and have dark feelings.

You have great vision and can be very insightful.
In fact, you are often profound in a way that surprises yourself.
Visionary souls like you can be the best type of friend.
You are intuitive, understanding, sympathetic, and a good healer.

Souls you are most compatible with: Old Soul and Peacemaker Soul

2nd Chichester Writing Festival (UK), 9-11 November 2007

I love to write, but these days, finding time is a huge issue. I tend to scribble down things on slips of paper and tuck them into my organiser for later use. I tend to write more poetry than stories, but love to write both. I'm my own worse enemy when it comes to my writing...

I'm an avid reader and have been since I first learnt to read. One of my goals for the next year is to -- obviously -- read as much as possible. Time, again, is an issue here. I'm a horrendous procrastinator when it comes to my university papers and I prefer to sit up all night to read a book instead of completing an assignment.

Your Brain's Pattern
Your mind is a creative hotbed of artistic talent.
You're always making pictures in your mind, especially when you're bored.
You are easily inspired to think colorful, interesting thoughts.
And although it may be hard to express these thoughts, it won't always be.

I like art, both viewing and creating it. One of my favourite artists is Salvadore Dali. As I am with my writing, I am quite critical of my own art.

I enjoy rock climbing, although I'm not great at it. I've had to give up yoga for the time being, but hope to get into it again sometime in the near future. As I've said time is definitely an issue with both of these activities.

I like taking leisurely strolls, but I have lived in England since August 2000 and I've discovered that you've got about a 90% chance of being caught out in the rain. I generally don't mind getting soaked in a summer rain shower, but that's not the case here. If it wasn't so bloody cold....!!!

You Are Fall!
Thoughtful
Expressive
Creative
Poetic
Smart

I'd like to meet:

Historically, I'd like to meet Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Abraham Lincoln, definitely JFK and both Roosevelts, Richard II, and Tolkein.

Family-wise, I'd have love to have known my paternal great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. I wish I'd had more time with my paternal grandfather too.

You have been marked on my profile map!

As for the here and now, I'd love to meet my Australian pen pal, Dolce. We've been writing to each other since December 1993. Throughout that time, we both have finished school, gone on to college, and met and married our now husbands. We've chatted online, via email, and have even spoken on the phone.

I've already met two of my favourite singers: Dave Matthews and Sting -- both twice. You could say I was in awe.

Music:

Music.... I like quite a lot of different kinds. For the first nine years of my life, I grew up on country music. I was then introduced to rock and roll and pop music. Fell in love instantly... not long after that I heard alternative/grunge and instantly liked it. I like all of the above, plus jazz, swing, and big band. I'll always give something a try. I'm not one to follow the pack on music. I'm not a sheep like so many others. If I like it, I like it and I don't care what anyone thinks of it or me.

Some of my favourite musicians: Dave Matthews Band , Chris Botti , Sting , ... of course, there's loads more.

Still, you know there's no place better suited to be your home.
You love your freedom and no one's going to take it away from you!

Books:

I love to read -- anything really that takes my fancy. I can be seen going empty-handed into a bookshop and leaving with about five books. I was quite a strange one at school. I read Russian lit and enjoyed Nabokov, Dostoyevski, and Tolstoy. I would borrow up to 20 books from the library whenever possible. I like the classics, but my tastes aren't restricted to any particulary author or subject. My husband bought me "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" and it is so me. A few of my favourite authors are: Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, JK Rowling, Tolkien, CS Lewis, Anne Rice, Phillipa Gregory, Jean M Auel, Shannon McKenna, Dostoevski, Tolstoy, DH Lawrence, Arthur Conan Doyle, Richard Wright, the Brontes, Shakespeare (of course), Ayn Rand, but there are really far too many I like to name them all. I love to read. Not many people do that nowadays. I like other contemporary writers too, even children's writers. I read to inspire me to write. That's what I want to do: write books. I think I'd be damned good, too. :-)
You Should Be A Leo
What's good about you: you always speak your mind and aren't scared of anything
What's bad about you: you have to be the boss, and you love to control others
In love: you enjoy being admired and pampered, but don't always reciprocate
In friendship, you're: easy to get along with and the center of attention
Your ideal job: member of royalty, TV anchor, or investment banker
Your sense of fashion: classic well fitting clothes that last forever
You like to pig out on: Greek or Italian food

Heroes:

I've never really had a "hero" as such, although I admire anyone who stands up for what they believe in, does what they want without hurting others, and doesn't give a damn what people think about them. Pretty much anyone who follows the beat of their own drum. :-)
You are a Self-Discoverer
You're not religious, but you've created your own kind of spirituality.
Introspective and thoughtful, you tend to look inward for the divine.
You are distrusting of all forms of organized religion.
