South Peoria man found guilty in 2007 shootingPEORIA - A Peoria County jury took about an hour and a half Tuesday to find a South Peoria man guilty of firing a handgun at another person last fall.Phillip T. Ellis, 24, 1065 S. Hickory St., was found guilty of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of weapons and possession of a weapon by a felon for the Oct. 26 incident.Prosecutors argued the victim was in the 500 block of West Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when Ellis pulled up in his car, got out and approached him.Ellis' attorney, Colette Bailey, argued the two had a "beef" with each other and that jurors should acquit her client because the victim had changed his story.Additionally, she contended, the physical evidence didn't match the victim's testimony that Ellis shot at him while he was in the car. Police found what appeared to be two marks on the victim's car that didn't puncture the metal. However, Assistant State's Attorney Suzanne Patton contended the victim picked Ellis out of the lineup and never waived from his stance that it was Ellis who shot at him in the early morning hours.Ellis remains in custody pending his May 30 sentencing.
