Oh, bloody hell. Should I even bother? Anything that's good at what it wants to be. I'll name drop Bergman, Herzog, Kaufman (mostly Charlie, but some Phillip), Renoir, Bresson, occasionally Godard, and Hitchcock just to keep up my rep.
I'll do the first couple in descending order of brilliance: The Wire, Deadwood, Firefly, Buffy/Angel, and from there...The Day Today, Brass Eye, Arrested Development, Rome, Lost, 24 (absurd!), Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm, the Sopranos, West Wing (preferably seasons 1-3), Scrubs, yada yada yada...
